Nightlife - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Nightlife

Whether you like to go to movies, attend concerts, sip martinis, or watch real cowboys riding bulls, Oklahoma City has a nightspot for you. This chapter is filled with places you can go alone, with a partner, or with a group to kick back and have some fun. Not every nightspot in the area is listed here, but from clubs to concert venues, it’s a good place to start.

North Western Avenue between 36th and 50th has many popular clubs. Bricktown is another area where people go to hear music, dance, and have a drink. Club Rodeo sits on South Meridian and along Pennsylvania and 39th, there are several alternative-lifestyle clubs. There are a number of movie theaters listed here as well as a comedy club and several concert venues.

Before you venture out though, there are a few things you should know. Most clubs that feature live music charge a cover charge. Meals and drinks are not included in cover charges so be prepared to pay extra. Cover charges range from $5 to $15. If a big-name musical band is performing, the cover charge may be higher. You can always find out the cover in advance by calling ahead or checking the club’s Web site.

All Oklahoma City bars and clubs covered here close at 2 a.m. on the weekends and in some cases earlier on the weekdays. I have included information about times in almost all the listings. Some establishments open at 11 a.m.; others don’t open until 4 p.m. All hours, of course, are subject to change. So if you are planning a night out, be sure to call ahead.

Oklahoma’s legal drinking age is 21. Minors are not allowed in bars or clubs that serve alcohol. If you have just turned 21 or could pass for a 16-year-old, make sure you carry identification because you will be carded.

Drinking and driving is never a good idea in Oklahoma City. If you do plan to drink, appoint a designated driver who will be sober or call a cab. Police are on the lookout for erratic behavior and will pull you over. The fines and consequences for drinking and driving in Oklahoma are significant.

As stated earlier, there are many fine establishments not listed here. When you’re looking for current nighttime things to do, pick up the Oklahoma Gazette (www.oklahomagazette.com), Oklahoma City’s cultural newspaper. It reviews and lists happenings across the city. It is published weekly, is free, and can be found just inside the front doors of convenience stores, restaurants, and clubs.
