Description: This was the home of Dr. Samuel Prioleau, in whose honor the first Summerville infirmary was named. The land was given to the doctor’s wife by her mother, Mrs. Benjamin Rhett, who lived next door.

Description: Dr. Benjamin Rhett served as a surgeon for the Confederacy and later practiced medicine in Summerville. His Victorian house was built on land that was once owned by the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Co. during Summerville’s first boom days in the 1830s.

153. Samuel Lord–Elizabeth Arden House (CA. 1891)

Description: This handsome Victorian house was built for Samuel Lord in 1891 by the same contractor who built the town’s celebrated Pine Forest Inn. With its three stories and impressive double piazzas, the ornate house was purchased in 1938 by Elizabeth Arden, the famous cosmetics magnate, who used it as her winter retreat. It remained in her possession until 1954. To return to Charleston, stay to the right on Sumter Avenue until it intersects with West Fifth Street at the First Baptist Church. Turn right and follow West Fifth back to Main Street, take a left and follow US 17-A through town until you see signs for I-26 S. That will be your quickest route back to Charleston.
