Insider Pick:

Description: Just off East Bay Street in downtown Charleston, the lovely Waterfront Park is another nice picnic and cool-your-heels spot. Sea breezes keep the tables under the covered pier area perfect for just these pursuits. Children have fun splashing around in the pineapple-shaped fountain or getting soaked in the circular spray fountain. We’ve seen pictures of half a kindergarten class in one of the large swings that line the pier, a 400-foot extension into Charleston Harbor. No admission is charged.

108. White Point Gardens at the Battery

City: Charleston, SC
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (843) 724-7327
Address: 2 Murray Dr.

Description: Frisbee throwers and cannon climbers love White Point Gardens. Children can run free beneath the canopy of trees and pretend to lift the immensely heavy and immovable cannonballs. Lots of photo ops here! There is usually a pleasant breeze off the water (the harbor circles around the point), and this open space is a much-loved haven of respite in the city. We used to search through the oyster-shell fill along the walks to find ancient shark teeth or other treasures. Don’t expect any more luck than we had decades ago, but do plan to enjoy the leisurely pace of an old-fashioned park. Of course, no admission is charged.
