Make a ride in one zone or between a neighboring zone (1-2 zones) $2. Make going across three zones $4.50 ( like Denver). And maybe a special additional $2 to go to / from the airport.

So riding North Springs to downtown would be $4.50. North Springs to the airport would be $6.50. Downtown to the airport would be $4. Downtown to PCM would be $2.

Just because major systems around the world have them doesn't mean we shouldn't. In fact usually the opposite.
This the craziest suggestion I've heard.

When I moved here in 2005, fares on Marta was $1.00. Now it's $2.50. Now you're proposing to double it again?

You must think that Marta riders are made of money or something.

$2 < $2.50.

But who rides Marta 2-3 stops? Not many. Most people ride it a fair ways, like Doraville - downtown. Think of all the people who ride it from Sandy Springs to downtown and beyond - don't you think having to pay $9 a day is too much of a burden? Keep in mind half of all workers make <30,000 a year - $9 a day is a lot of money for most folks.

Let's get the min wage up to $15 an hour and then maybe we can talk.

If I had my way, Marta would be free - yes, free. Think of all the traffic this would pull off our overcrowded road system. Slap an extra 10 cents gas tax to pay for it. Problem solved.

Free transit has it's own issues.

Fares were $1.75 in 2005.

Well they may do it that way because it makes sense. Georgia often likes to do stupid things (not that flat fares are stupid) because its the Georgia way.

It costs more to transport people further. They should pay more than people who travel only a short distance.

Under my suggested zone pricing, Doraville to downtown would be $2 since Doraville is ITP.

And yes, free does not work. It has been tried and failed elsewhere already.

Or $2.50 from Doraville to Airport and 15 cents from Arts Center to Midtown

Sure. That would probably be more distance based fares. But I support that. It should be super cheap to only go 1 or 2 stops.

But the total amount of revenue from fares still needs to at least equal what we a getting today.
