No, automatics are boring and my grandmother can manually shift her auto shift. So? As far as fuel economy is concerned. Nobody with an automatic can get 35 mpg (as I do with my Firebird 3.8) driving in Toronto. I consistantly get 40 to 42 mpg on the highway and the reason is the lack of a torque convertor. The only automatics that come close to manuals in fuel economy are large semi-trucks with multi speed transmissions and NO Torque convertor. The truth is, nobody in our affluent society gives a rip about fuel economy or skillful driving. Too bad!
Really? Every single car with an automatic is "boring?" Even a 500 hp Corvette?
Or a classic car like a 427 Yenko Camaro (a solid 12-second car) is "boring?"
Automatics do have an advantage of high speeds in each gear. For instance, this '68 Dodge Charger R/T with 426-Hemi, 3-speed auto and 3.23:1 axle ratio.
Borg Warner 35, used by several manufacturers back then. AMC, MG, and Jaguar springs to my mind ...
It was smooth ... and that's about the nicest thing I could say about it, because whatever power the engine had at the crank, you're not going to get anywhere near that amount afterwards.

Yup, great ladies cars. Boring.....Now if you're not a very good driver, you have to go for the auto shift. I cringe when I watch some of these guy drive a 5 speed. Pretty rough. And my grandmother can squeeze a throttle to the floor, but she's not too good with a stick. Yawn, yawn....

Interesting... I see quite a few good drivers with 12-second muscle cars with automatics at the weekly car gathering. Maybe I should tell them that they are driving "ladies cars," the next time they are blasting down the 1/4 mile!

You should remember to let them know that any old grandma can drive fast in a 1/4 mile straight road too.
Can any old grandma handle a 500-hp car and run a 12-second 1/4 mile?
Also, remember there are some grandmas who can drive a car with a manual transmission... does that mean they are "manly?"
It means the know how to drive a proper car.
500hp and an Auto? floor it and keep it straight, you know it can't be hard when a Tv presenter was taught how to drive a top fuel drag racer in 2 hours.

What about driving an automatic-equipped car on mountain roads? Downshifting through curves, accelerating coming out of the turn, etc.
I find it hard to believe that only cars with manual transmissions are fun to drive.
As I posted above, what about a '69 427 Yenko Camaro with an automatic? No fun to drive strictly because it's an automatic?
Or another example I posted earlier... a '68 Dodge Charger with 426-Hemi, 3-speed auto and 3.23 gears. It could do 63 mph @ 6500 rpm in 1st gear and 107 mph @ 6500 rpm in 2nd gear... but because it has an auto, it's "no fun" to drive? I strongly disagree.
When I referred to a 500 hp car with an auto, I meant those I see regularly at car shows. They are street driven and are not just run at a race track.
