I expect the next step will be for the vehicle to detect & then to report to law enforcement when a vehicle is speeding, runs a red light, fails to stop at a stop sign, etc -- and for tickets to be issued automatically.

Yup, Utah and New Mexico or Texas have big rigs doing 80+ and it's legal in many States.

After yesterday I can tell you that there is a major problem with this. On my way to work in Seattle I noticed that the signs on Alaskan Way said 25 mph, but my Ford Synch 3 screen showed 30. So, on the way home I connected to Apple CarPlay, and sure enough, it also showed 30. If the car doesn't know the correct speed limit how can a ticket be issued. I would be ticketed for 110 over at 35 though according to my car I was only 5 over.
Besides the assault on our freedom, the technology is just not there yet.

California would become the first state to require new vehicles be equipped with speed governors — technology that limits how fast they can be driven — under legislation by San Francisco state Sen. Scott Wiener.

The bill, introduced Wednesday, would require cars and trucks of the 2027 model year or later that are built or sold in California to include speed governors that would prohibit motorists from driving more than 10 mph over posted speed limits.
There is zero chance this bill gets passed.

Probably not but just the fact it's being proposed. We need a part-time legislature, it's insane how many ridiculous laws/bills they come up and pass.

Let's spin this - tickets will automatically charged to credit cards. Objections only for those who have pre-paid accounts or Vitamin B.

And anyone who is flushing the toilet more than twice a day is disconnected from the city water service for a week. I could rise high in the Democratic Party with my above average imagination.
