No one gives a rat's patootie if you are a New Yorker as long as you are here paying taxes and being a good citizen, LOL. If you are a horse's arse, it doesn't matter where the hell you came from. If you are a good citizen, you will be welcomed.

The difference is . . . North Carolinians didn't put out a big ole sign saying - Please come down here and take advantage of our lower taxes and housing prices and then vote like you still live in New York. We would not have wanted Hillary Clinton as our Senator. And please don't come down here to take advantage of our system and then DISPARAGE IT. If you don't like it, why the hell did you come? (This is not aimed at you, Jay, this is just rhetorical). Yet, this is what we hear from a large number of transplants and this is what we get - changes in voting patterns, demands for services that will surely increase our taxes!!!

So that is why we are loathe to hear more New Yorkers may decide to land here.

If you want to fit in here - FINE!! If you want to contribute to making positive changes wh/ benefit all of us - FINE! But that is not always what we get from people we Southerners dub as "Yankees." What we get is a love hate relationship. We are told - gosh, love the weather; love the lower taxes; love the cheaper housing - but God, the schools (pick any combo): Suck; Are too crowded: Are not as good as what we had BACK HOME; have teachers who are hicks; lack in curriculum, etc. etc.

Plus, we have to endure: Why is there no good food here? I don't want my kid to talk like you hicks; the streets are poorly maintained; where's my UNION HALL??? etc etc

Those are the things that make Southerners want to close the borders. That, and having to deal with rude Yankees on streets, roads/highways.

If you don't say/do those things and you are a tax-paying citizen - no, I would like to add - a tax paying, God fearing good citizen, you will be welcomed. If you are not God fearing, then at least be "law abiding" and that will go over fine, too.

As I have said before . . . if the shoes doesn't fit, then don't put it on. The people I am referring to know who they are. And most likely, they don't even post on our forum!!! If they did, they would probably have a CLUE by now.

And I have been seeing A Lot of people moving back to their original homes because they move here and find out it is not for them. Others are moving onto another place they think is perfect. When will others realize this is the south not the north. It is different and in a lot of ways extremely different so why the heck complain. You, meaning anybody not a particular pster, must have known everything would be different and you would need to adjust. However, some of you have the mentality that you don't need to adjust but rather others living here and really enjoy it have to adjust to you. If you enjoyed how things were run where you came from, you should stay there.

Personally, I think some people (including me sometimes) need lessons in reading comprehesion.Amazing how certain things get taken totally out of context.

For example Ani's comment about "nobody invited you here" and the reaction to it. That phrase has been used for 300 years to signify that if you don't like something move. Or correct it. Or live with it.But don't keep harping on it or use comps to where you came from.
Why take that phrase to mean anything else and put your boxing gloves on?

Who does the flippin zoning around here!! at least up north, those yankees know better than to let trailers/mobile homes go where ever, they don't do crap for the value of a HOUSE!!!
At least some "Yankees" don't stereotype either as you seem to be doing. I once lived in a trashy piece of crap as you put it and am rather proud of that. If you or anyone else does not like the zoning here, then why move here???? Cheaper living also means difference in zoning. This is not the north, some need to adjust or get out.

Last time I checked, Southerners did NOT invite you people here. Life here is as it is b/c of a long history of independence and recognition of individual rights. We did not create a life here to meet with your approval. Life evolved here b/c this is how the citizens here wanted it to be.

As far as your teeth, you are welcome to take your pearly whites and BITE MY PINK . . . <taking deep breath, censoring self>

Darlin' . . . it is obvious we hicks are just not sophisticated enuff for your very special Big City self. So I suggest you pack up that carpetbag you brought down here, and head on back home. Da Bronx doubtless has zoning that suits you better.

You said it so much better, Ani. This makes me want to go out and get a trailer and put it next to that nice big mansion even more.

It may be a joke to most on this board, but bagels and pizza are something that can be found every 2 miles in New York. It's something all we are used to. Of course I liked those things to, but I will certainly not complain about it here, becasue quite frankly I didnt move here for pizza.

People do have a right to voice their opinion if some schools here dont stack up to schools back from where they are from. If Winget Park Elementary was the greatest school in the country and than you moved to NY for economic reasons, and sent your kid to a school that you thought was not nearly as good, are you saying you wouldnt complain?? Of course you would.

As far as the "I don't want my kid to talk like a hick", thats pretty brazen. Have you ever actually heard someone say that? If so, than those people deserve to be treated with every negative stereotype associated with being a rude New Yorker because thats exactly what they are.

My point is, not every NY'er is that person.
Jay, you know I have always enjoyed posting w/ you and so I hope I in no way have offended your sensibilities. I also know you are a good citizen and have done your best to make a good life for yourself and your family here.

I complain about the schools myself. What I am saying is . . . people don't have the right to complain when they haven't been paying the taxes that fund those schools. In addition, people who come here seeking low taxes need to reassess the situation with our schools here, as you CANNOT HAVE BOTH. You can't have these lower taxes and have new schools everywhere. I know you see what I am trying to say. Maybe I didn't say it the right way.

And my reference to food - I totally get what you are saying. And frankly, I would be THRILLED if we were so lucky in Charlotte as to have the wonderful Italian food, bagels, etc. that I so enjoy in NY/NJ. My palate is not as discriminating as NY/NJ natives, I am sure, so I find Italian food here that is fine with me, but I do know mediocre from superior. And we could use more "superior" Italian food. I am not putting down the longing for this at all! I am putting down the condescending manner in which the longing is often expressed.

As for people saying they don't want their children to talk like "hicks" - yes, sir. I have heard it expressed exactly that way twice - both in school settings. I heard it b/c several newcomers were talking amongst themselves. This was when my son was in school. However, they were talking so loud, we natives heard the comments. And you can bet I said my peace about "accents" and "improper grammar." One incident involved a gal who had used the infamous "youse guys" earlier in the evening and so I reminded her that accents are one thing - bad grammar is something else.

I have also had people say straight out to me that they were concerned about their children picking up a Southern accent. What they meant is - the redneck, low class speech patterns that exist amongst the uneducated. That is not the same thing as a Southern accent, anymore than bad grammar and poor pronunciation is with any group of people.

We have all been through this Yankee Invasion discussion many times! I do have the right to protest arrogance and condescending attitudes, b/c as I said before . . . come here and make it your home! But don't disparage what was here b/f you came. This was MY HOME and MY FAMILY'S HOME since the early 1700s. We know it isn't perfect.

That house with the trailer next door? And the nice house on down the road? That may have been my grandmother's house. And when she was too elderly to take care of things by herself, that trailer was probably her grandson's living quarters, while he helped take care of Grandma. And that other nice house? That may be my Aunt and Uncle's house. Grandma deeded off the property to everyone to keep them close by and so they could work the farm. See what I mean? Derogatory comments about such things are taken quite personally here. There are reasons why life in western NC has evolved the way it has.

I would never be so uncouth as to run my mouth about things that "make New York New York." There are things about NYC that natives tease about - from cat calling construction workers to taxi cabs that run you down. No parking spaces! If I complained about no parking spaces, I would be told - get a grip, girl. Ride the subway. Leave your car at home. You are in NYC now. This isn't the burbs.

People want to move here b/c of A, B, C, D. Well, here's the scoop. This is true for anywhere you move. Along with A, B, C, and D comes E, F, G and H. If people are that bothered by E. Trailers F. Schools G. Food and H. accents - they just shouldn't move here.

ROFLMAO!

Well, my grandfather had emphysema in his later years. They lived in a big ole Victorian home w/ the wrap around porch. Trying to put A/C in it was a nightmare. So grandfather ended up confined to one room. As his condition worsened, that house was just too much to deal with.

Solution? He bought a mobile home and put it in the backyard. It was airconditoned, easy to keep warm in the winter, cheaper to heat, as well . . . easy to keep clean. Anyone who thinks that is trashy - OH WELL!! I just thank God he had the acreage and lack of zoning that he could have done it. Otherwise, he would have had to go to a nursing home.

So yeah, I get it. I am just very hurt that others are so judgmental.
