Yes we do have snakes in Charlotte. Also had snakes in NY and PA and MD.
I have come across a few black snakes while walking the dog in the morning but they are harmless and tend to stay curled up under the bushes.
The ones that scare me are the baby Copperheads that love to nest in the pine needles along our house. This year alone, have come across 3 of them.
Pine needles make great nesting spaces since it is cool and damp.
If you spend a lot of time outdoors you are going to see many snakes. I try to spend as much time outside as I can throughout the year and I see snakes all the time. I love seeing them around b/c they keep the rodent population in check. I've mostly seen black snakes (rat snakes?) and once a dead baby copperhead. Saw a ring neck snake once too. Every time I see them they are either hiding or on their way back to hiding. Most snakes won't want anything to do w/you and will slither away as fast as they can!
One story I will relay, though, is a dog that was killed by a snake bite in our neighborhood last summer. I'm sure it was a copperhead, and apparently we have a lot of them in the grassy areas near the woods in my community. The backyard butts up against the tall grass, and the dog was in the yard. My parents' dog was also bitten by a copperhead once but did not die. They said the owners of the dog in my neighborhood must not have gotten the dog help quickly b/c it's unusual for them to die from a bite.
I think your family will be fine. There are snakes everywhere, even in Ballantyne (I've seen them there too!). You just don't usually see them unless you are looking.

Talk about timing....I was just out pruning the azaleas and what should come slithering by but the 3-4 ft black snake that we see from time to time. He was headed to his home under the front porch. He must have had a good day because there was an obvious bulge in his belly that made it a bit difficult for him to pass through the hole in the lattice. I stood back to let him pass undisturbed, hoping it was a mouse in his belly...or a baby bunny (they grow up to be big bunnies that eat my plants).
The copperhead snake is quite common here and I've seen several large ones in Charlotte. Once we killed a 4-5 footer right on my front steps. If you live near woods, you have to be on the watch for them as they are a venomous snake.
