The context of 1 Peter 3:21

1 Peter 3

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.
10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look. 13 Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, 15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; 16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. 18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

Peter is writing to encourage Hebrew and Gentile christians who are suffering for Christ during intense persecution.

Verses 1-7 Peter writes about Godly living, marriage, and the roles of husbands and wives.

Verses 8-12 he writes how we should treat one another.

Verses 13-14 he says we should always do what's right, no matter what.

Verse 15 he says that no matter what we suffer, we need to trust Christ. Other people will see this and ask about the hope that lies within us. Peter tells us to be kind and patient when we answer.

Verse 16 He says we need to keep our consciences clean no matter what others may say.

Verse 17 He says it's better to suffer for doing the right things than the wrong.

Verse 18 Jesus died for sins once for all to bring us to God. He rose from death and God made Him alive.

Verse 19 He preached to the spirits in prison. The spirits in prison are linked to the time of Noah.

Verse 20 He says these spirits were disobedient during the time Noah preached. He says God was patient while during the days when Noah built the ark. Eight persons were brought safely through water.

That is the background for verse 21.

Verse 21 Peter says there is a correspondence between the flood of Noah and our baptism. Noah was brought safely through the waters of the flood. Noah was not saved by the flood. He was saved through the flood. In like manner, we are saved through baptism, not by baptism. God saves us through our baptism. The flood was the saving event. Baptism is the saving event.

Peter says baptism is not an outward cleansing. The water doesn't save. Peter qualifies his statement, "baptism now saves you." He says that it is a request to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Christ.

Baptism is a picture of the flood. The flood was the event associated with Noah's salvation. Baptism is the event associated with our salvation. Romans and Colossians both tell us that baptism is when we die to our old selves, and we are brought safely through by the power of the resurrection of Christ.

Verse 22 Jesus sits at the right hand of God. The angels, authorities and powers are subjected to Him.

My conclusion: Baptism now saves you. It is the the saving event, not the cause of salvation, just as the flood was the saving event for Noah. Baptism is a request to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Christ.

God bless you all,

Katie

Baptism will not save you. Jesus Christ will. Should a believer be baptized. YES. If they are not and believe in Jesus Christ will they still be saved? yes.

Read the OP. Baptism isn't what saves. It is the saving event. Big difference.

Everyone, including me, understands that the blood of Jesus saves.

I don't have the right to say who will or who will not be saved, and neither do you. It's not my call, or yours.

All I can do is present the Scriptures. Jesus clearly commands us to be baptized. I don't have the right to tell someone they don't need to be baptized, especially when you take into consideration that Jesus commanded it.

God bless,

Katie

See baptism as a point of Contact of faith in Gods Word and commands... Jesus leads people to be water baptized in repentance in faith , as Jesus sees who is baptized , and if they repented , and if they were sincere or for a show to others and lack faith in God ..... So Jesus will put in His spirit to those who believed and prove their love for God and Their willingness to stop sin ...As Jesus sees believers and know who believes and who get baptized for the grand mother only ...... Still believers need other believers for their prayers to Jesus to help them , and cleans them with Jesus blood ........

There were Biblical examples of people that were saved but had not been baptized, therefore; it is not a requirement for salvation.

Look at the verse...What is the main focus here is it beaptism or believing?...
Mar 16:16 The one believing and being baptized will be saved. And the one not believing will be condemned.

It states that the one not believing will be condemned...Baptism is a part of Salvation, however, emphasis is placed on the believing part because it is repeated, but baptism is not repeated...If not being baptized will condemn you, then the thief on the cross is condemned for he was not baptized after believing...If these are the rules, then he was not saved...

So then you don't believe you were saved when you were baptized by the Holy Spirit?

You're saying baptism is not necessary.

Blessings,

Katie
