First, California probably has the best higher education system in the world. A Chinese University publishes a yearly report (Academic Ranking of World Universities ) on top research institutions in the world. California Schools (University of California system, Stanford, USC, CalTech, and Claremont Colleges - Harvey Mudd..etc) take up 10 of the first 50 slots.

Second, California (the 7 or 8th largest economy in the world) is being jobbed by Red states. For every dollar in taxes sent to D.C. it gets back .78 cents back, while Texas gets back .94 cents. Given the size of the California economy that's a lot of money going to fund red state budgets. In my opinion the reason for the discrepancy is largely due to the death of republican party in Cali. Since they know Calif is a dead spot for them, Republicans have decided to rob us blind. Our deficit would go away if got another 6 to 10 cents back from the Feds.

Lastly, California is responsible for so setting trends that have had worldwide impact over the last 30 to 40 years: Tech, Science, Entertainment, Food, Lifestyle and Environment. IN short California is an innovation machine.

This is really getting on my nerves. The Frenchman has no clue about what Texas is, was, or will be (much like A&M Bulldawg). He also is completely clueless about California.

Hey Frenchman, you want to know why people love California? Because its beautiful, diverse, and open minded. It is always going to draw people whether you like it or not. I love Texas, but to put it bluntly, Texas doesnt have those things the way California does. Texas has 2 or 3 diverse cities, but California has at least 8 or 9. Texas has some natural beauty, but you cannot find the mountains, beaches, and deserts on the level that you can in California. You wont find Yosemite, the Redwood Forrest, the Riveria geography of the Coast line, or the proximity of them to each other. Texas has a few cities that are open minded, but most of Texas (outside the Major cities) is extremely closed minded. California does a much, much better job overall of welcoming you no matter who you are.

So in summary, California will never be down for long. If prices come down, people will start moving there in droves. Who wouldnt want to live where you can have the beaches, mountains, forrests, and deserts close by while having 70 degree weather year round?

As for you guys who are trying to attack Texas based on this thread, dont. Htown is right. Why go down that road when the whole reason for this thread is some guy in France who doesnt have any clue about the reality of either state. The fact that he gives Perry the credit for the economy should tell you that. We should never lump people are states together like they are all the same.

Bottom line is this. These are the two most powerful states (along with New York) that we have. I have found them both great places to live. People should be so luck to live in either. Yeah, its expensive in California, but the climate, natural beauty, major diversity, and open mindedness make up for it. Texas may not be much to look at, but the people are very nice, its cheap, there is diversity to be had in the Houston and Dallas, and the economy is good.

California Federal Tax Dollars Spent Elsewhere
1987 $8 Billion
1988 $15 Billion
1989 $20 Billion
1990 $18 Billion
1991 $9 Billion
1992 $3 Billion
1993 $3 Billion
1994 $1 Billion
1995 $1 Billion
1996 $21 Billion
1997 $35 Billion
1998 $52 Billion
1999 $67 Billion
2000 $101 Billion

2001 $77 Billion
2002 $35 Billion
2003 $14 Billion
2004 $18 Billion
2005 $47 Billion
1987-2005 $545 Billion

Assuming that 2006-2009 were similar to 2005 then we can deduce that the total between 1987-2010 is around $800 BILLION

And some people have the gall to insinuate that the fed is going to bail us out?

HA!

Critically, as Texas grew its middle-income jobs by 16%, one of the highest rates in the nation, California, at 2.1% growth, ranked near the bottom.
So in other words the nation’s most prosperous economy through 1998 STILL managed to grow in 2010? They rode the wave as far as they could and now that they’ve beached the surfboard, you consider it an epitaph? If you say so. Neither China nor California can maintain double digit growth in perpetuity. Lesser states like Texas will eventually become better business environments. It’s supply and demand inserting itself. It’s expected.

Quote:
In contrast, Texas’ tech-related employment surged 14%. Since 2002 the Lone Star state added 80,000 STEM jobs; California, a mere 17,000.
With the land values and presiding salary structure of Texas, this should surprise no one.

Quote:
Houston. Mobile, Ala., Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga., also have big plans to lure high-paid blue collar jobs away from California’s ports.
They are high-paid because of unions. If “right to work” states see port business as a cash cow, they may be sorely disappointed.

Quote:
“green jobs,” up to 500,000 of them, will turn the state around. Theoretically, these jobs might make up for losses created by ever stronger controls on traditional productive businesses like agriculture, warehousing and manufacturing. But its highly unlikely.
So a move towards 19th century staples is the suggested path to lead California out of its economic “slump” even as Texas adopts California’s 20th century business portfolio.
OK.
I’m not saying green jobs will work, but I’m fairly confident that a move towards an economy built on low-skill, low investment, low margin established industry seems unlikely to produce a renaissance. California paved the path and led the way for Southern states’ current technology ventures. It’s not impossible that in 2050 Texas and North Carolina will be churning out low cost non-union solar photovoltaic film and wind turbines while California moves on to custom nano-genetic holographic medical widgets and the skeptical Southerners who are on the rise will recommend that California instead invest in the more stable, reliable business of laptop manufacturing.

Lol, at the people that get all worked up when somebody trolls Cali for once. Texans/Southerners have to deal with that kind of crap on this forum everyday. Quit your complaining.

BTW, to set the record straight, I don't think renaud adds anything useful to this forum with his posts.

I disagree, there is something absolutely beautiful about a Frenchman trolling a bunch of Californians by comparing them to Texans.

You're correct, it's not right but it's nobody's fault but the people of CA who vote their elected officials into office and in turn destroy their own state. CA's problems aren't because of TX, blame yourself.
