It is like that in the Finger Lakes Region, which is a big wine producing area as well. https://www.google.com/search?q=fing...w=1280&bih=929

That is only minutes away or I could check out the Adirondacks about an hour and a half away: https://www.google.com/search?q=fing...liage&tbm=isch

Perhaps the 1000 Islands about another hour and a half drive away: https://www.google.com/search?q=1000...w=1280&bih=929

Or take the 40 minute trip to Oswego, where Lake Ontario and the Oswego River meet and sitting at Brietbeck Park or by the river while chewing on a half loaf from Garofalo's Deli to view a beautiful sunset: One of the Greatest Sunsets on Earth - Oswego, NY - YouTube

You overstate Metro NYC because some of that MSA includes New Jersey.

This is a stupid analysis. If NY State is so good why has the area continually seen OUT-migration to other states? People vote with THIER feet!

Yet we're comparing QOL in a state that is 164,000 square miles to one that is 55,000 square miles.

I'm not sure if you are intending to compare Finger Lakes, Adirondacks, 1000 Islands, and Oswego to California's equivalents, but for purposes of this thread, I would offer California's comps:

Northern California:
Napa/Sonoma counties--best wine producing region in the western hemisphere: https://www.google.com/search?q=napa...iw=963&bih=811

https://www.google.com/search?q=sono...iw=963&bih=811

Mt. Tam is minutes from SF and Marin county: https://www.google.com/search?q=mt+t...iw=963&bih=811

Mt. Diablo is convenient to the East Bay: https://www.google.com/search?q=moun...iw=963&bih=811

Santa Cruz Mountain Range--Santa Cruz Mountains are convenient to the South Bay: https://www.google.com/search?q=sant...iw=963&bih=811

Lake Tahoe and Gold Country/northern Sierras--short drive from Sacramento:

https://www.google.com/search?q=lake...iw=963&bih=811

https://www.google.com/search?q=cali...iw=963&bih=811

https://www.google.com/search?q=high...iw=963&bih=811

Yosemite--long drive from population centers, but truly epic

https://www.google.com/search?q=yose...iw=963&bih=811

Monterey Peninsula for the lower part of Northern California: https://www.google.com/search?q=mont...iw=963&bih=811

Not to mention Big Sur, a short drive from Monterey: https://www.google.com/search?q=big+...iw=963&bih=811

Pinnacles is also a pretty short drive from Monterey: https://www.google.com/search?q=pinn...iw=963&bih=811

Far northern California is a nice trip for a long weekend from Sacramento or the Bay Area.

Mendocino: https://www.google.com/search?q=mend...iw=963&bih=811

Shasta: https://www.google.com/search?q=shas...iw=963&bih=811

Redding: https://www.google.com/search?q=redd...iw=963&bih=811

Central Coast:

Paso Robles, center of Central Coast wine country: https://www.google.com/search?q=paso...iw=963&bih=811

Pismo Beach: https://www.google.com/search?q=pism...iw=963&bih=811

Gaviota State Park, convenient to Santa Barbara: https://www.google.com/search?q=gavi...iw=963&bih=811

Southland:
Palm Springs, convenient to LA: https://www.google.com/search?q=palm...iw=963&bih=811

Joshua Tree, also convenient to LA: https://www.google.com/search?q=josh...iw=963&bih=811

Ensanada, Mexico is a nice getaway from San Diego: https://www.google.com/search?q=ense...iw=963&bih=811

In short, California has no shortage of scenic destinations within driving distance of every major population center.

I've lived in both California (in the SF-Bay Area, and visiting LA often) and New York (in Albany, and visiting NYC often) for many years, so I have a pretty good idea of what life is like in both states. In terms of quality of life, it is no contest in my eyes...California wins hands down.

The comments about how the people differ are mostly (if not all) stereotypes, although the comments about the weather and environment obviously are true.

I've lived in both places (I'm currently in NJ), and in terms of natural environment it really is no competition.

You can drive from beaches to mountains to desert in California in one day, and most times the weather is obviously better.

That being said, it's slightly unfair to compare Cali to NJ/NY since Cali stretches all the way from the south to high north (with all the attendant changes in the natural enviroment), whereas NJ/NY are both in snow weather areas.

Actually, NY has still added population due to immigration and births.

Also, as you mentioned, many people that move out of NY just move to parts of the metro in NJ, CT or even PA.

This was basically my point about NY State. It is more than just NYC.

Like others have mentioned, California pretty much takes up half of the West coast, if not more and is 3rd in land size versus NY State, which is 30th in land size.
