Chicagoland: 17.0% Black/17.9% in combination
Greater NYC: 16.6% Black/17.8% in combination

Chicago: 31.9% Black
New York City: 24.7% Black

Chicagoland: 1.7 million Blacks
Greater NYC: 3.4 million Blacks

Chicago: 865,000 Blacks
New York City: 2.0 million Blacks

Both cities and metros are in close proximity Southern United States, but prior to the 2010 census, both were #1 and #2 in Black population. Both cities have had an effect on the African American community, and both cities were very much influenced by the Black community.

Which city and metro area is more culturally black?

What do you mean by culturally?

New York City has a diverse black population.

Lots of Caribbean, Africans and African Americans, and Afro Latinos also.

It's kind of a broad topic, but basically this: Which city's black population has affected local city culture more? Music, arts, food, speech, religion, neighborhoods, politics, economy, social interaction, etc.

Broad, yes. But it should serve as an impetus to having a lively discussion. Use any criteria you want, considering culture is a pretty loose concept.

And yes, blacks includes all blacks, including foreign blacks, native blacks, etc.

I used to love those commercials! JET, EBONY, Johnson Products Co., and the Soul Train (all have Chicago origins)! Things have changed a lot in my 42 years.

That said, I don't know which is more culturally "Black." As near as I can tell, if Black culture IS NOT in the toilet, it is VERY close to a toilet. I write this with much disappointment in regards to our collective descent.
