I suppose one could argue that Chicago is more African-American, but NYC is definitely more black overall. Chicago has very few foreign born Africans or blacks from the Caribbean given its size. NYC has an extremely diverse black population completely with African Americans, Africans, and blacks from the Caribbean.

NYC is not more black overall. The metro areas are both the same percentage black yet Black Chicago is much more culturally cohesive and has more political might

In terms of the cities, yes, but in terms of the metro areas, they are probably pretty even.

And the reason for that probably has to do with the lack of black diversity in Chicago.

Yeah this is really what it's all about. The same way Chicago has a drastically bigger and more prominent Mexican population, but New York has an overall bigger and more diverse Hispanic population which includes South American, Cuban, Puerto Rican, etc.

African American dominance (southern roots) Chicago > NYC
Diverse black population Chicago < NYC

Both are important to US, and outside, Black Culture !
As an outta state fellow, I feel like NYC is more important. But, as someone who tries to go deeper, I "feel" that Chicago is more important. Many civil rights battles in "Da Chi" as NYC seems more "Ethnic".
But if we include standards of living, it would be NYC hands down, because poverty and unemployment are higher on " Da Chi". Just my 2 c

For me, Chicago seemed to have a much more predominant black population, neighborhoods, and more pervasive black culture than NYC.

NYC certainly is a cultural powerhouse for Black America, but the presence of so many Puerto Ricans in New York's black neighborhoods (not sure if this is still the case) has created a kind of hybrid culture that is unique and quite different than what I have experienced in Chicago and other American cities with large AA populations.

I wouldn’t go that far...

What some may not be considering is that Brooklyn by itself is similar to Chicago in population and has a slightly higher black percentage. Parts of the borough like Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Crown Heights, Canarsie, Flatlands, East New York and adjacent parts of Flatbush, Clinton Hill and Fort Greene are predominantly or pluralistically more black and are pretty connected. So, Brooklyn by itself could be compared to the city of Chicago.

Then, when looking outside of the cities, southern suburbs, some places north of the city and parts of NW Indiana is generally where you see higher concentrations/percentages in the Chicago area. In the NYC area, such places are more spread out and can be found in just about every county in the area like Spring Valley in Rockland County, Mount Vernon in Westchester County, many of the places in NE NJ(Newark, Irvington, the Oranges, Englewood, etc.) and Long Island(Hempstead, Elmont, North Valley Stream, Wyandanch, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, etc.), among others. So, the impact is likely to be felt differently in that regard.

NYC black culture has definitely influenced American pop culture in the past few decades especially recently with the word lit being a defining slang word for generation z. Hip hop has been a strong force from NY as a black art form. Chicago still has influence with the word thot being nationwide but most Black people view Chicago as Chi-raq. NYC and ATL are the two dominant players in Black Culture and in youth culture in general.
