Chicago wins this, though it is not my cup of tea.

Chicago probably has a higher proportion of blacks, but in NY blacks have more influence of the overall culture of the city. For Chicago, there is it's own black culture, but it really doesn't impact the culture of the city. Most whites don't really know or care what blacks are up to in Chicago. Other races in Chicago don't care either.

In NY people of all races use the same slang as blacks, share the same interest as blacks, etc. In the 70s and early 80s, hip hop was a black thing, but people of other cultures and races were equally into it. I can't see that ever happening in Chicago. "mad", "ill', "buggin" all came from blacks in NY, but everyone in NY uses this slang. So I would say blacks in NY has more impact in the culture than they do in Chicago.

How is it a yuppie POV? People from all walks of life in NY get into NY black culture. That's fact. Can you say the same about Chicago?

Depends. If they grew up in the city then more than likely they probably do. For better and for worse... if they didn't then definitely not...

as for NY, I seriously doubt some investment banker who lives in Manhattan Calls his co-worker "son" and "yo money"

I've never stepped one foot in NYC. However, I've heard the terms that you mentioned in a previous post. Like most of us, non-Black New Yorkers included, we learned those terms via the media (as you mentioned). More often than not, when others use terms like "illin," it's used a punchline. Like it or not, Black folk are still viewed primarily as entertainment. Others know that all they have to do to gain the favor of Black folk is to imitate Black folk.

I'm certain that the fact that most of us speak English or Spanish and practice a Western religion is proof positive that White folk continue to exert the most cultural influence in the U.S., regardless of location.

United we stand, divided we fall!

LOL. I remember Cypress Hill mentioned "Afro Sheen" in one of their songs.

Hmmm tough one if we're talking about all time as both cities have contributed a bit from the community. If we're talking about recently in the last say 20 years, I'd probably go with NYC.

I feel this simply has more to do with the fact that New York is more of melting pot than Chicago.
