Good lord, sarcasm........ I have been to Birmingham many countless times and coming in on 1-20 the skyline makes me sad because it is so pathetic. Sandy Springs. GA has a bigger skyline.
And Birmingham is 10 times better at the street level than Sandy Springs.
So they've been doing seismic tests looking for oil off the coast of Virginia Beach. I'm curious what would happen if they discover sizable oil reserves in that part of the Atlantic. If they DO, and they start drilling (though it could take a while), I could see the area totally and utterly exploding.
It's a bit of a stretch to say this means that Birmingham is becoming a center of auto manufacturing as neither of those plants are in the Birmingham MSA. They aren't far away, but they're not really associated with Birmingham either. I think Birmingham is still more of a healthcare/banking town and actually transitioned to a service-sector economy pretty successfully in the 70's and 80's unlike other cities that were built on heavy industry.
I don't know what it would take to get C-Ders to "feel" like those plants are "associated" with Birmingham but for the people that live here and work at those plants it isn't even a question. As well as those who work at the supplier companies that have moved here. We are definitely still strongest in healthcare and banking (and construction) as you say, but auto manufacturing with its roughly 8000 jobs between just the two big plants alone is a big deal. And now Aston Martin is sniffing around.

I suppose one might say Birmingham is bookended by auto manufacturing and the plants are close enough to employ folks in greater Birmingham (particularly out in the suburbs/exurbs), but it's hard to see how the city itself is a center of auto manufacturing. Certainly it's an industry that does well in Alabama as a whole which can't be denied.

That seems reasonable enough. However, I think the location of these plants was influenced by being in proximity to Birmingham and it being a truck and train traffic hub.

That seems feasible; certainly proximity to I-20 had to play into the decisions as to where the plants would be located.
Curious...what's the occupancy rate for those high-rises?
