Yeah, Austin is bad this year.

98,000 people and 85 homicides. Meanwhile go a few miles to the east to my neighborhood of Lakeview and it's at 99,000 people and hasn't had a murder in about a year and a half.

85 vs 0 and only around 7 miles apart.

The racial aspect really draws lines between groups as well. Black murder rate this year is 65.0/100,000 and the white murder rate is 1.6/100,000. Hispanic is at 14.0/100,000 and Asian is maybe 1.2/100,000.

You are more likely to get run over by a texting driver or get into a bar fight in Lakeview.

I just went google streetview on Austin and Lakeview... The city council should be ashamed... the difference is worse than night and day between those two places... Lakeview is actually a beautiful place... But as odds as it is, there are some nice part in Austin

One thing that's surprised me in my 16 years in Chicago though is just how much the city spends on the ghetto and bombed out areas. It's very equitable from an infrastructure and city spending standpoint. I drive through the really terrible areas all the time, and just like Lakeview or Lincoln Park or the really nice areas of the city - the crosswalks are always painted, the sidewalks are rebuilt and repaired, alleys are kept up, the city does the same street sweeping, striping and quickly replacing any burnt out street lights just as they do in the fully functional areas. Sometimes I am quite shocked driving down a newly rebuilt street with nice sidewalks, new street lights and fresh paint - when there is hardly a single occupied house on the block.

One thing that comes from having 50 alderman who are very active - they fight to keep everything they can equal in the neighborhoods.

Now the PRIVATE structures and buildings, yes, that's extremely stark.

here's a random street in a bombed out area I clicked on, the infrastructure itself looks upkept enough.

St Louis has a rate of 63 murders for 100,000 people already. Wow...

14,000 per sq miles. That's a indepth point of view. More social networks within tight space interacting with each other.

Baltimore is such a troubled and (nationally) problematic city.

I can understanding having a little bit of a crime problem, lots of decent places fit the bill for that, but this is really just pushing what's meant to be acceptable well beyond its limit.
