The Tapp's Art Center had its grand opening yesterday and is ready for First Thursday tonight. So that's the Tapp's Art Center and the Columbia Museum of Art on adjacent blocks with the state's only movie art house set to open soon halfway between them.
I noticed yesterday that on the Columbia Museum of Art block (1500), Wine Down on Main will be opening just across the street from the museum. It will join the museum, Something Special Florist, Wedding 101, Free Times, Capitol Places the White Mule (live music), Frame of Mind (optician), Sylvan's Jewelers, Essentials (hair salon), Pia's (hair salon), the Columbia Conservatory of Dance, Gotta Dance (a ballet/dance store), Coral's Ladies' Fashions, Drake's Duck-In (burgers and sandwiches) and Cowboy Brazilian Steakhouse (packed). The building between Drake's and Free Times is being rehabbed, and the Charleston Developer that bought the McCrory's building on the corner is supposed to start renovations soon.
And that's just one block. No, it's not like there's nothing going on on Main Street.

Starbucks ain't stupid. They're "coming soon" to the Schulte-United building across from the Nickelodeon. So on that block we'll have Mast General, the Nick, Tapp's Art Center, Hennessey's, Paradise Ice, S & S Art Supplies and Starbucks, along with some other merchants and some other buildings sure to be renovated and utilized soon.

I went to the Tapp's Art Center last night. Man, what a major step up from the gym that was there. The performing arts hall in the back is the icing on the cake. The cast of a Trustus Theater play performed last night. I forget the name of the play, but they sounded great.
BTW, across the street from the arts center, Hennessey's is closed for renovations. I know they had said they had plans to renovate and to add a balcony for outdoor seating.

Who.. that would be cool.. A new orleans style balcony like you see in the French Quarter.. Similiar to the building across from City Hall.. that used to be a night club.. Incidentally, what is that building now across from City Hall on the Main Street side???

Someone appealed a rejected application to open a nightclub with booze, but I don't know the outcome of that yet.
