The new construction will go on a site off of Devine and Gadsden streets near Colonial Life Arena, according to a USC email sent to the Greek members on Thursday and obtained by Free Times.
The work will include a 1,200-space parking garage and 30,000-square-feet building for shops, meeting space and academic offices that could open as early as fall 2018.

This is a clandestine effort to suppress Greek membership, something many universities are doing. I was a part of the Greek system in college, but I'll be the first to admit the entire system needs reforming if it is to continue. It can't survive the social media age in its current form. It has many benefits, but the hazing culture has to change.

I remember when that was proposed and got approved I think early last year or late the year before that at a city codicil meeting.

Such interesting timing. My brother and sister-in-law are in Charleston down from Lake Murray for a high school coach's convention. She is still involved from an administrative standpoint. He's retired from coaching. She said tonight at dinner that they have started alternating between Charleston and Greenville because people from the Upstate started complaining about having to come to Charleston every year. I asked if they were overlooking Columbia. She said Columbia doesn't have a big enough space.

In a way, that's a good problem to have. The convention center is a success and we need more hotel rooms. Could be worse!
Exactly; with demand it will be enlarged. There is also the CLA next door; I bet the CLA could be used for exhibition space. While we have a small convention center, we have the largest arena, by far.
