I grew up in Columbus. I now live in Charleston. There's something to be said for a lower profile skyline. In Charleston, no building is allowed to be taller than the tallest church steeple (which translates to 12-14 stories.)

Back to Columbus...the government center has always stood out like a sore middle finger in downtown. It's dated. It's ugly. And I would love to see it replaced by something that reflects the existing architecture surrounding it or even the historical architecture that defined the city. I'm not strictly opposed to height, but a new building should be designed to fit in better with its surroundings.

The Aflac tower is doing just fine.

Columbus could use more vision.
Even Athens has a more satisfying “mid rise line”
Let alone the rest of Georgia
When I think (second largest city) I imagine an actual city- not town

There are plenty of visionaries in Columbus. They just don’t have any clout.

Right! Columbus will without a doubt have the least satisfying skyline amongst the 2nd tiers and Athens. It’s really baffling to me that they are committed to this considering the government center is not only structurally sound, but fully capable of being renovated….they had more vision in the 60s when they designed the current tower than the present day leaders do.

I never cared for Augustas skyline either but at least they aren’t trying to destroy it.

The view from the 13th St. Bridge looking from Phenix City is actually pretty good. Especially with the Hotel Indigo and Rapis building. Add two more, which is happening, and I think it looks solid. Can’t lose the Government Center though.

Funny story - For years, the WTVM weather radar was on top of their tv studio. And there was always one little chunk missing from the radar scan...because it was blocked by that #$@! tower.

(Ironically, I believe this was while WTVM was owned by AFLAC. Why they wouldn't let them put their radar on the roof I have no idea.)

I'm not a fan of the Aflac building either. There are so many gorgeous grand houses along Wynnton Rd, and the streetscape is totally disrupted by it. But I do like that it's not downtown. Decentralizing a business district is probably a good thing. So is density. It is definitely a product of its time.

It's the lack of building designs too. The government center can be transform into something like this

But of course they'll rather copy the design of a hotel (indigo).
