It’s hard to say if this will result in a significant increase. The trend working against this is the lower birth rate. As I’m sure you have noticed, people today are having fewer children. Large families appear to be a thing of the past. That seems to be the problem our state has faced in recent years and it will impact New Haven too. Jay

I thought about this, too. Just based on the # of units constructed, it's increased by 5,000+. My guess is the increase is at a slightly higher rate as between '00 and '10. Remember, 360 State actually opened right after the 2010 census count, and quite a few buildings followed even before the boom in the last few years. Presuming 6-7000 more, it would be about 137,000. Though I do worry about an under-count, considering the national messaging about the census.

What do you guys think of New Haven's new Mayor? Do you think he'll be better than Harp?

The infamous Pirelli building was just sold. The new owner is planning to turn the building into a hotel.

Yes, this is great news since this building is iconic. I was always surprised IKEA did not try to incorporate their store into this building. They originally wanted to demolish it. Fortunately they realized what it was and recognized its historic value. I will be very glad to see it preserved. Jay

That will be one ugly hotel! May appeal to those who miss the eastern Europe of the 60's and 70's?

In general I appreciate the brutalist style, but honestly I find the building boring and ugly. Hopefully the developer can find some creative ways to dress it up and make it more visually striking.

Regardless, it is good news to see that it will be used as something other than a ginormous billboard for IKEA.

Construction of a new hotel at the corner of Orange and Elm Streets has revealed some leftover pieces of history. For some 70 years the corner had an Art Deco bank building more st recently occupied by Webster Bank. The developer is now demolishing the building which is revealing long hidden remnants of a church that once stood on the corner. Very interesting. Too bad they can’t incorporate these into the new hotel. Jay
