The view from third base toward right field at the new ball park. April should be fun and a bad month for the naysayers.

The building all the way to the right of the frame is an old Bank of America processing center. It's been sold but I'm not quite sure what it is now. Maybe vacant?

The brick building just north of the development is a Elementary School and just to the right of that is Rensselaer. I think this is the same elementary school that announced the Yard Goats brand and logo though I could be wrong.

Stadium may not open on time..

Stadium For Yard Goats May Not Open On Time - Hartford Courant

I'm really not too surprised. They should have seen coming a long time ago. It isn't easy to finish a baseball stadium of that size within a year. I am however, a little shocked that snow hasn't fell yet. This could affect the stadiums development depending on how severe a snow storm is.

Hard Rock International plans to bring plenty of amenities to its hotel in downtown Hartford: its signature Hard Rock Cafe, a rooftop pool and bar, and even live performances in the lobby while guests check in.

But there is one feature Hard Rock isn't planning for the hotel: a casino.

Todd Hricko, Hard Rock's chief for hotel development in the U.S. and Canada, said the deal signed with the developers of the Downtown North redevelopment "calls strictly" for a hotel.

"We are not actively looking to expand the project, and there is no tentative discussion of bringing in a casino feature," Hricko said.

Hard Rock and Middletown-based Centerplan Cos., the Downtown North developer, last week touched off a flurry of speculation about a casino on social media and on local radio talk shows after announcing plans for a 170-room hotel that would open in 2018.

Hartford has submitted a bid to host a casino that Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods hope to jointly operate in the Hartford area. City officials have said no specific location was proposed but left open the possibility.

In addition to 157 cafes and 22 hotels in 64 countries, Hard Rock also operates 11 casinos. Hard Rock has shown strong interest in bringing gaming to the region: In 2013, Hard Rock sought to build an $800 million casino, hotel and live entertainment venue in West Springfield — a proposal ultimately rejected in a local referendum.

A city spokeswoman said Hartford officials have not been approached about a casino, and Robert Landino, Centerplan's chief executive, said a casino has not been discussed for Downtown North, or DoNo, just north of the heart of downtown.

In an interview with The Courant, Hricko said there are plenty of other reasons for Hard Rock to view Hartford as an attractive market for a hotel: the chance to get in on the ground floor of the DoNo neighborhood and its new, minor league baseball stadium; the city's constellation of theaters and restaurants; and an attractive riverfront area.

"The combination of a thriving arts and entertainment center and a musically based hotel just seemed to make a whole lot of sense," Hricko said.

Hard Rock also is seeking to poke holes in the perception that Hartford can't host a "destination hotel," especially one that is designed around music.

"It's not just another hotel, and there is a connection with what they are going to do in DoNo," Hricko said. "We are certainly hoping our hotel and the DoNo neighborhood will fill the consumer need for a new experience in Hartford and New England."

Over the next decade, plans for the $400 million DoNo redevelopment of a long barren area north of downtown is expected to include apartments, shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.

Hricko said Hard Rock was approached by Centerplan earlier this year about the potential for a hotel in Hartford. Hard Rock has a goal of adding 80 hotels to its chain by 2020, some of them in smaller markets, such as Hartford.

The hotel in Hartford — to be called Hard Rock Hartford — will be far smaller than other Hard Rock hotels, which typically average 600 or so rooms. Hard Rock will operate the hotel, but it will be built with private financing by Centerplan.

Cost estimates are still being worked out, Centerplan says, but the hotel's cost would be included in the $125 million next phase of DoNo, on land at Main and Trumbull streets. The next phase, where construction is expected to begin in the spring, also would include apartments, shops, restaurants and a grocery store.

The prospect of another hotel comes as the city's hospitality industry struggles to recover from the last recession. Some progress has been made: According to STR, which tracks hotel occupancy in markets around the country, downtown's occupancy through October was 60.8 percent, compared with 56.4 percent for the same 10 months in 2014. Business travel accounts for a large share of hotel stays in the city, but Hricko sees Hard Rock as drawing on the weekend, too.

"What I have seen in our hotels, you capture those business travelers during the week, and maybe your wife and family comes in on Thursday for a long weekend," Hricko said.

Hricko said the hotel will also will draw from the local market, as its establishes an alternative, smaller presence for bringing live music acts to the city.

During the Yard Goats' season, it will be hard to argue about the view from the roof of the hotel, Hricko said.

"The rooftop bar will be a whole new experience for Hartford," Hricko said. "You'll be able to see the ball field, while enjoying a cocktail or a beer."

The cost overruns are more problematic, IMO. Hartford now has to find more money it doesn't have. But its pretty surprising that they can't get this done on time considering the weather has been extremely cooperative. What were they going to do if we had a normal winter? How late would it have been then? I've said it before and I'll say it again, this project is a boondoggle.

I thought the opposite - driving past it daily the progress is visible and the weather is cooperating. I thought it would be ready for opening day.

I think there's more to come from this story - first it was 4 million over budget, and now it's 10. Hopefully it's not as messy as the Dillon Stadium debacle.

This sort of has the developer's side of the story. Can you say "lawsuits"? Jay

I have always disliked Hartford's Metropolitan District Commission (MDC). They seem to have no accountability for their actions or inactions. This though is a new low IMHO. To charge the developer of 777 Main Street downtown nearly $500,000 to hook up to water and sewer when the infrastructure is already in place is outrageous. I hope the developer sues but I doubt they will get anywhere. As an organization, MDC is the worst and protected by state laws that give it too much power with little oversight. Jay
