The site of the proposed casino has been revealed and it is not part of the NoDo development. According to the Courant this morning, it is a 10 acre parcel near the Xfinity Theater in the North Meadows. Kind of far removed from downtown and any action IMHO. Is it me or does anyone else think that a downtown location for a casino is a good idea. It would definitely bring more people downtown but whether it will add people to the streets is the question. On the other hand would having a casino downtown slow the rapidly expanding housing market there? Any thoughts on this? Jay

There was a recent episode of South Park where the town went through this big gentrification (mockingly) in order to attract a Whole Foods to town. They called the new district "SoPa", was pretty funny and accurate.

Downtown Hartford and streets close to Downtown will go through the changes.

I'm with you. Adding a casino to downtown would be a good idea but I would add that it has to be more than just a casino. Perhaps add a music venue ( not like infinity hall) but more like a CBGB and a mixture of unique and nice places to eat.

The rapidly expanding housing (more like apartment market) would not take a hit. Some of those old factory buildings are aching to be converted.

It should go in downtown not by infinity. Makes no sense there plus were are all the sweater wearing Dave Matthew band kids going to party?

It is about half way between them. XL is a couple of blocks to the south of the stadium and Xfinity is a couple of blocks to the north. I-84 separates the stadium area (now called NoDo) from downtown and railroad tracks separate it from Xfinity's neighborhood which is called the North Meadows. Jay

I think grouping the XL Center, XFINITY Theater, Casino, Hard Rock Hotel, Casino, and the Riverfront in one area is a smart move for the city.

North Meadows site is Hartford's proposed choice for the casino

North Meadows Proposed As Site For Hartford Casino - Hartford Courant

This is not a good site IMO. It's off of New Road right by the railroad tracks down a side street. There aren't too many good spots for a casino in Hartford but probably the best site is off of Market Street within a block from the Yard Goats stadium. It's the vacant site right next to the Citgo gas station and its visible from Interstate 91. I see potential especially since this is the site that includes the walkway over 91. Building it closer to downtown is likely the best bet. Building it by car dealerships and in a part of the city that's nearly deserted at night right on a dead side street is not a good spot.

We'll see what it does to Springfield.

Shreveport has built 3 casinos within 3 miles of each other. 2 are in Bossier City and 1 is in downtown Shreveport. Downtown Shreveport is growing next to none and its suburbs such as Bossier City where the other 2 casinos are located, are growing pretty fast. Of course there are other factors that come into play. Casinos do create jobs, however not many people would want to live next to a casino. For example in Bossier City, in the neighborhood right next to the casino you're seeing vacant homes and properties that people arent willing to buy. As you get farther away from the casino there are neighborhoods that are doing quite well.
