Did any of the "defenders" of this action actually read the article?? The dog was shot on its own property! Not in the street...not in a neighbors yard....not acting aggressively. So now the cops can walk onto a persons property and shoot an animal that lives there for no reason other than a neighbor called and said it was "loose". Nice.
Trigger happy thugs.
Walk on to my property and shoot my dog in my yard and see what the headlines read.
There is no law that says a dog must be restrained on its own property. This was over the top use of unnecessary force.

The story reads that one dog was shot but keeps making references to multiple dogs escaping because the gate was open, how many other dogs were there?
Is there a link giving the police perspective?

The dog growled, bared it's teeth and ran at the officer.

Did you actually read the article?

Where in the article did any witness say the dog didn't act aggressively? Nowhere. (Which is why I made my remark above - sarcasm of people making statements based on their opinion only)

Headline "Dog owner convicted of capital murder of police officer to be executed today". I hope you don't have any children that would have to endure having their father executed.

-----------

We don't know what actually went down, but in situations like this where the information is so lacking, I'm initially going to side with the police over the irresponsible person letting their dogs roam the neighborhood potentially risking the safety of others.

It's a fact that there are bad cops out there. We all know that; however, I'm not going to always automatically assume that every incident is "rogue cop" like so many others seem to believe.

I remember not long ago another thread like this where some moron who feels he needs to be an a$@ puts his dog in the car with the windows down. The dog gets out and clearly goes after a cop, it's on video where the dog lunges with mouth open, and people think the cop should have essentially allowed the dog to attack him. It was all the fault of the moron owner, yet a bunch of cop haters blamed the policemen for not saying, "well, nothing I can do but get attacked by this dog."

We are now being policed by a paramilitary organization. "Serve and Protect" is a joke these days.

No.

And if I did and my dog escaped, I would accept the consequences. As, unfortunately, would my dog.

It's called "personal responsibility".

Too bad it's so lacking.

It is not relevant at all. It is just an irrevelant fact inserted by the journalist to try to get you to sympathize with the dog owner and her pit bull.

Some of the dogs I have worked with at our local shelter are quite capable of opening doors and gates. Most owners quickly learn this and take steps to make sure doors and gates are secured.

It also could have been a utility worker that came into the yard to read the meter, etc.
