This is exactly the thing that has concerned me the most for the last several weeks. Typically, Ebola outbreaks occur in relatively remote areas, some distance from international airports. The grim calculus of the disease is such that most people who contract it in remote areas don't live long enough to get outside that isolated area and spread it. But in this outbreak, several of the "hot zones" have international airports in their boundaries. Someone can easily become infected, and 12 to 16 hours later be in New York City, before they're even symptomatic. One flight to Madrid or London, a quick transfer to a transoceanic flight, and here it is.
Or, as happened just a couple of days ago on a Beijing to Detroit Delta flight, allowing a child to poop in his newspaper-covered seat, horrifying passengers. When told to take the child to the restroom, the grandfather insisted he be allowed to "finish" there.

Yes, the possibility is remote, but this is a smaller world now. And we're far too "tolerant" of cultural oddities.

whats the problem? the seat had newspaper on it, nothing can get past newspaper!
i like the terrorist angle the other person mentioned. as if there isnt a million easier ways to commit acts of terror than going to africa to get infected with ebola to try to come back and infect americans.
anyway, we all know this isnt how it happens. be worried when a communicable disease starts turning people into zombies. the best thing to do is get in your underground bunker for a year or so and make sure you stockpile guns & ammo and always aim for the brains.
Ebola is not Captain Trips. It can only be spread through direct contact, like people have said several times in this thread. There are a few reasons it keeps spreading in Africa and cultural norms/ignorance about the disease is included in that.
Ebola is a very serious and dangerous disease and we should talk about it, but people getting really frightened and alarmed isn't going to help.
A Charlotte hospital closed its ER department when a patient came in who arrived from Africa with symptoms. They took all precautions and it was determined the patient did not have Ebola and was sent home. They did NOT test specifically for Ebola. The patient is being treated for another illness not consistent with Ebola.
Peace Corp is removing its volunteers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Two volunteers are in isolation after coming in contact with someone who had Ebola. They will return to the US after medical clearance.
Although Ebola is very scary. It's not very contagious, meaning you have to come in contact with an infected person's body fluids. It's not airborne. What really scares me much more than Ebola is a mutant strain of Swine Flu that is immune to antibodies. We've have had a few really nasty flu outbreaks in our world history and Flu still stands as the biggest threat to the end of the world as we know it.
It's been over 600 years since the world population actually declined due to a contagious illness. Unlikely to happen in our lifetime absent biological warfare.
That thought crossed my mind too. If they can, they will. Promise.
Once again, what exactly what that do?
Ebola is not some magical movie disease that you simply spread through coughing. You need to be up close and making physical contact with an infected individual, it doesn't spread like the flu.
It really annoys me to see the media preying on people's ignorance about diseases in general to try and sell a story.

There was one Ebola victim who prior to boarding a plane to Lagos seemed ok. He got violently ill on the plane and died shortly after the flight landed.
So it now looks like Ebola did spread from this incident on the plane. Nigeria has confirmed it has a case of Ebola. All passengers should have been immediately quarantined after deplaning.
When someone has severe symptoms on a plane, I wonder how they can sanitize and disinfect properly before putting that plane in service again? I would think the planes would harbor pathogens and spread the disease during future flights.
