How many people have you known, or screened in a job interview, with the name 'Cooter' on their birth certificate/job app. (?) Especially from the 'hood.
That's a canard to try and deflect from the thread topic, which is about the real-life obstacles people face when they're given unusual, ghetto names. I assume you're also trying to backhandedly belittle rednecks with your submission of Cooter.. c'mon man.
Why is everything about "the hood" or "the ghetto?"
Yes, a poor name choice can effect a person's entree into society or certain jobs, but I think this is equally true for other names aside from "hood" names or "ghetto" names.
I was attempting to inject a tiny amount of levity into an apparently grave subject for some people.

If you expect a baby you should be smart enough to think of its future when you name it. If you aren't, you might be hindering your child to be successful later on. Also, if you aren't smart, your child might not be smart either, so the stereotyping isn't that far off ....
It has been proven that people with (boring) traditional names like Max or Lisa are more likely to be hired and successful as a De'Asia and La'Keisha.
I work with a bunch of super smart engineers and we have 10 new engineering interns every year and every single one of them has a boring, traditional name. Go to Starbucks and you will be served by a girl named "Angel". I would love to name my child "ANGEL" or "Rocco" but you gotta think ahead. Ever had a boss with a cute, extraordinary, made up name? Probably not.
This is directly related to racism/ xenophobia. It isn't because a person who is named after a relative who happened to be born somewhere else or a person who's parents had a different idea of what a good name is can't be employable. Also, as someone else mentioned, Asian and Indian names don't seem to get the same treatment.
I do not understand. Some people claim the black applicant has a better chance of being hired over white applicants these days in some sort of affirmative action reverse discrimination and now others say the black applicant has less of a chance of being hired. Which is it?
Dont forget , Diesel, Chipper, Skeeter, Marybeth, Kip, and many more. One lady named her child Tommyhawk after the Braves one the world series in 95.
Hey what's wrong with Vin Diesel? I dare you to say something about his name to his face.
NO idea what's wrong with any of these names......it's not like someone named their kid Mosquito or Fly or Snail.....now that would be ummmm....unique?

Indeed. This isn't about race. It's about parents being silly and giving children stupid names.
Give a kid a white trash name or an ebonics name and you have handicapped the kid.
