Not surprised. Canids are very adaptable. Years ago my house was not far from a major river and greenbelt. Most nights of the week at certain times of the year the local coyotes would have a gethering not far away. We used to say "last call at the bar in the woods" because it seemed to happen about 1 or 2 in the morning without fail.
A guy down the road had a Collie that produced some strange pups one time too. Don't know the whole story. I think these guys are here to stay no matter what we do.
I think OP was referring to how many evangelical Christians believe, based on biblical interpretation, that species are static and unchanging, and that evolution by natural selection is false, whereas this eastern coywolf phenomenon shows evidence of a rapidly occuring speciation event.
I'm a Christian. "Evangelical?" ummm...not so much. And I know we WISH some species stayed unchanging and static. But that ain't coyotes. They are flat made to adapt and become more and more better at making our lives miserable. "Here's to Neighbor coyote, Who'll outlive Earth Wind and Sky. He'll be here long after we've parted ..Like scorpion rat and fly. ( Shoshone Proverb)

If you think about that it's true of many canids. After all dogs are basically wolves that adapted to domestic lives over many generations. But don't try raising a wolf pup at home; it usually doesn't work out too well. The evolution takes many generations.
Maybe the OP was trolling, trying to ensnare religious fundamentalists. It's a pity because how these wolcoydogs got here and how they are unique is an interesting topic that doesn't need to be piggybacked on pet peeves.
Evolution can work pretty quickly. Dogs breeds can be developed in 7 generations. Boars can develop from pigs in 3. These are distinct species, but Mother Nature can move pretty quickly when she wants to.

I know that OP ( ScoopLV) in real life. He wasn't so much trolling as being his acerbic self. He strongly objects to people who can't seem to balance science with their faith. It was a good article, imho. I also always enjoy NVPlumbers posts. He's mentioned his coydog many times before.
Where I live, they look kind of like underfed German shepherds with long snouts and have been known to snack on a kitty cat or small dog. I don't think they regularly jump people's six foot backyard walls around here much, because there might be a pitbull on the other side. Pretty smart. They remind me of dog-like raccoons.
I have to admit, as much as some from the east coast pushed the non-native wolves on us in the West, I am a bit pleased they will get to deal with them.
Have fun with that. I hope no children are harmed.
I have little problem with coydogwolves in the East or reintroduced wolves in the West. Many of the ranchers are using subsidized/very cheap ranchland, courtesy of the U.S. government. I don't see why their right to no wolves trumps the public's right to forest land not decimated by elk.

Does it matter? The thread title " Survival of the fittest -- new wolf/coyote/dog hybrid expanding FAST in northeast...." sets forth a worthwhile topic and one that, by and large, has been discussed. And I really don't see the relationship to evangelicals. Golden Retrievers, for example, are not a separate species. They are merely a very vicious subgroup of "dogs."
Having read the article in the OP, perhaps coyotes, wolves and dogs are subgroups of one species in the same way since they can and will interbreed with each other.
