The waiting lists are for babies, if you're willing to adopt an older child there is no wait. Sometimes greedy awful people even adopt older kids with special needs, because those kids get SS money that is supposed to help pay for their care, but the adoptive "parents" just pocket the money and let the child rot. This is also a big problem in the foster care system, which has a long history of abuses. As long as people get money for taking these kids, there will be people who take them in who couldn't care less about them.

This happened in south Jersey several years ago, a whole houseful of adopted kids who were being starved behind locked windows for years. One child got out and was found picking food out of trash cans, that's how the rest were discovered. He was something like 17 years old and weighed about 80 pounds.

For people who say there should be inspections, well that would be nice, but the tone of our country has been to lower taxes at all costs, and one of the main ways they do it is by hiring freezes on city and state jobs. Then you end up with a social services system where one caseworker has 47 kids assigned to her. If we put on a ballot today, "Should we raise the sales tax 1 cent in order to hire enough social workers to properly take care of kids?" I guarantee it would get voted down.
