Saw where the French President arrived on scene.. Which struck me as odd.. Wouldn't it be smarter to stay the hell out of the way and let.. You know.. Professional firefighters do their job?
Since 1905 all houses of worship in France are state property, so yes it is appropriate for Monsieur le President to arrive. It will be up to the French government to repair/rebuild or whatever decision is made in respect to Notre Dame once fire is extinguished.
Leaving that aside Notre Dame besides being a major tourist attraction is part of the national culture of France. It has existed long before the republic and survived revolutions, wars and invasions....
Live coverage on France 24 now says that the basic structure will survive. However, they also say that they are awaiting confirmation of such.
All the live video I have seen, shows the walls still standing and the fire mostly contained. It's a very aggressive firefighting effort. Firefighters are inside the towers.
Agreed, according to the report I just watched they had just cleared the last of the tourists out for the day to commence construction around 6:40ish local time.
That sounds about right, doing construction in the "off hours". It's a horrible event, but I can't imagine if it was an accident caused by a single construction worker, the guy might be on a suicide watch from all the guilt.
Has anyone read Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follet? It is about the building of the great cathedrals in the 1100s. Many of them burned hundreds of years ago.
The fact that Notre Dame lasted for 800 years is a gift to all who were able to see it. 800 year old wood is very crispy. Everything comes to an end.
