Damn, I need to be a former professional married to a highly successful woman. Then again, that would insinuate that I am professional. Can one be professional when they sometimes work in their pj bottoms and no shirt? Maybe I could go the trophy husband route... well, guess I'd have to be either good looking or charming for that. Dang - guess I'll just have to continue working... sob...

friend of my husband is attorney who has worked for several oil/gas companies in Dallas area over the past 30 years--
now he is working on his own helping businesses like the Catholic diocese of Dallas with leasing their land to oil/gas companies

he works out of the "playhouse" behind his house..usually goes to work in pj's until about lunch time--
his wife retired this year from teaching so she is home full time now--she said he drives her nuts in the summer and does not know how it will work now...because sometimes he does have people actually come to his "office" for a meeting and he will be in shorts and a t-shirt, barefooted...

the saving grace is that he truly is a good attorney who knows oil/gas law better than the back of his hand and most of his clients are referred by other satisfied clients so they aren't put-off by his "unprofessional" dress/location

that is almost as good as being retired...

Southlake or Highland Park?
Highland Park - no contest.
Close to downtown Dallas, SMU, established neighborhoods, good schools...

The people here are very very nice. I would venture to say they are nicer than any place we have ever lived. They are also more down to earth than the neighbors we had in Plano when we lived there about 10 years ago (I don't say this with any ill intent..I love Plano, have lots of friends there, would have happily moved there again). Everyone is very neighborly. It feels a bit reminiscent of the 1950's--kids bicycling down the street, the old homes and big trees, the charm, lemonade stands. Heck, 4 neighbors came to introduce themselves the day we moved in and brought treats. I'll keep you all posted....

Could it be that the people in UP/HP has less to prove why they are so down to earth compared the southlake/plano.

Seems to me that UP/HP folks are happy and content and don't feel the need to prove themselves while southlake is busy trying to prove to everyone that they are due credit as being on of the best or should be mentioned with UP/HP lakewood.

its like having the insecure good looking friend that needs the "pat on the back" to feel good

making generalizations about personality types for an entire town is just stereotyping don't you think...
unless you know a significant # of people in either place

Exactly! Old money or new money. Both have outstanding schools and communities. I would give HP the slight edge because they have withstood the test of time. Can't say the same for Southlake because it's to new.

there are some people who would consider trying to break into an "old money" neighborhood when they don't have the same background/connections to be very intimidating and would prefer Southlake were more people are in similar situations...

we moved to Shreveport from Houston in last 70s and lived there for about 4 years--
Shreveport in some areas is very like HP or PC areas--maybe homes aren't quite as expensive but there are certainly people with money--generations of money--insular--few people have lived out of state or even gone to college anyplace but LSU--they see each other at church and the country club--their kids go to the same private schools from preK up...
most people were friendly but we never felt that we reached parity...we were transitory and proved it when we moved to DFW
My point is unless you live there HP or Southlake) your opinion is just that--an opinion...
and people who ask which is better are probably asking people who don't have first hand knowledge--at least from living in HP or PC areas--
some people on the FTW board live in southlake but I don't think anyone on the Dallas board actually LIVES in HP or PC...

I lived in UP for four years and next to HP for eight years but don't get me started about that!

However, most of what I know about Southlake is what I see when landing at DFW. So I (gulp) would say choose HP.
