By your logic, an extremely high number of HIV-positive people is also an indicator of "success" and "wealth." In any case, Estonia has by far the highest number of HIV positive people in Europe, ee is at the absolute top! Sorry, for off-topic.

There are no protective masks here in the 'rich' country, there are no means of disinfecting hands and there are no even opportunities for tests. Thus, in short, these official figures do not indicate anything. This is just the upper part of the iceberg !!

How are the hospitals doing?

In Ukraine ( where the Covid is picking up speed) in response to the "official reports" regarding the "preparedness of the hospitals to fight CV,") the doctors somewhere in Odessa decided to go public and to denounce the lies in media.
They decided to tell people what the REAL situation in their hospital is, how many doctors/nurses they have there left working FOR REAL, how many ICU beds/ventilators ( practically none,) and that they still don't have any protocol how to deal with CV patients, not to mention any protective gear for themselves.

And this is the report from inside of the one of the "hospitals," where the patient diagnosed with CV has been placed to. ( Somewhere Vinnitza region, approx. from 2:34)
No comments there.

As long as you don't have to deal with anything like that.

But overall I think that former CIS countries that have foreign loans like Ukraine, or "success stories" like Estonia, are probably in the most difficult situation now in Europe, when it comes to this epidemic.

Oh, and in Ukraine they are still pressing with "healthcare reforms" and diminishing medical services amidst this outbreaks ( so-called "optimization". )

Those were all demands of the IMF, and they feel pressured to keep on going apparently, in order to receive yet another tranche.

And since ball games are quite popular here, that unhappy match also had a lot of spectators ) There is also strict quarantine in that province, in other parts of the country the restrictions are more lenient.

Thankfully, there are far fewer cases per 1000 inhabitants in Ukraine than, for example, here.

The recent announcements from the local front:

Estonia 858 cases 11 deaths
Latvia 458 cases 0 deaths

What do you think of Belarus? I have heard that, unlike in other countries, the authorities have not imposed restrictions there.

No, from what I see on their TV - they did not. (I mean what do you do, when you don't have money for this kind of emergencies, but play hockey (as Lukashenko did,) and proclaim Covid as some kind of "Universal conspiracy?")
But at least by now they are not in denial any longer - they produce the masks and are talking about taking at least SOME precautions. Yet still the way they sound - they keep on stressing that CV is not all that dangerous.

On another hand - their health care doesn't seem to be destroyed as in Ukraine within the last five years or severely shaken as in Russia, as the result of the neoliberal ( or downright liberal) reforms as you wish.

At this point they report about 260 cases, 11 in ICU and 4 deaths so far.

The bigger picture - who knows.
Same with Ukraine.
It's hard to tell what's going on there, since so many Ukrainians are returning from Europe now, and their outbreak might be only in the early stages.

P.S. Lukashenko called Russia's closing the borders ( with Belorussia including) "bungling."
"Russia is huge" he said, "but they didn't cut off their regions internally, yet they've shut down the border with Belorissia with no warning."

The local police and the National Guard are patrolling the Norwegian-Swedish border. They have catched several Norwegians on foot, bicycles and mopeds trying to smuggle cheap alcohol, tobacco, etc.

The 1,630 km / 1,012 mi Norwegian-Swedish border has tonns of small roads and paths.

Belarus is taking the macho road in this. They don't have much choice. Lukashenko explained himself yesterday. He said that America has a machine that prints money. Russia has vast reserves of currency and mineral wealth of all kinds. China has vast manufacturing abilities and wealth.
Belarus has nothing like this. All they have is what the people and nation produce. If you shut people up in their homes then you have no economy. Period. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
