Very true. However, the severely obese will have difficulty working on their body composition without being concerned with weight loss and the number on the scale.

What gets me about this topic is there are certain women out there who take this whole being "thick" fad to the extreme simply because that's what certain guys like and they think their fatness is equivalent to being thick. So that gives them a free pass to be laz(ier) and eat KFC and Cheesecake Factory everyday.

Well, if those women are happy that way and that is what their man likes, it is totally their prerogative. That would not be for me, but as they say, different strokes and all.

In general, I don't know how someone can expound with hard and fast statements about the population at large.

Yes, people are overweight because they consume more calories than they burn. That's a hard point to argue.

What I will say is that not everyone is playing with the same deck of cards in terms of what they burn. I don't know why that's so hard for some people to accept, either.

At the one extreme, you have people that go out and drink 5 nights a week, whose exercise is the occasional walk, and remain trim.

On the other, you have people that struggle eating salads and working out as much as they can and still look chubby or fat. I have a friend like that, she's worked hard and lost weight, but hasn't made much progress in terms of physique over the last few years (although she is in good shape in terms of cardiovascular and strength perspective.) A hateful old lady still made a comment about her weight recently, despite her stalled but significant progress.

And, still more that have said, "I'm not willing to meal prep every Sunday, pack meals for work trips, skip doing things with friends, prioritize working out over socializing or attending kids sporting events, or prioritize it over sleep/time with my spouse, and I'm going to be somewhat overweight." They will make the effort to eat well and exercise, and recognize that their paunch is the price they pay for a life lived on their terms.

The much bigger folks, the types that are "TV show heavy," I feel for, but in many cases regard it as similar to someone with a drinking problem or a hoarder. Plenty of drunks don't want help despite all sorts of negative consequences, or can't stop without significant intervention and long term care. Actually, in some ways they have it worse than heroin users or drunks. You can walk away from the needle or from the bottle and never see it again. But, for someone that struggles with food, its something you always need.

Nothing wrong with peach cobbler if it fits within your overall eating plan.

These words really hit home. While I am not that extreme, I religiously work out and find myself ever more time constrained. After being overweight for so long and finally getting my body back, I am hesitant to accept being even "somewhat overweight". BUT...it comes at a cost and I have to figure out if I want to continue paying the price, which is less time with my family. My family has been supportive because they know a healthy Mom is a good thing but still...I already work outside of the home for 8 hours, commute for 2 per day, walk the new dog, and still try to find time to work out, spend time with the kids and spouse AND somehow fit sleep in there. it's hard..very hard. I'm one of those people who do well diet-wise when simultaneously working out, they both complement each other. The minute I stop working out, the arthritis pain will start to kick in and then it's probably back to Ding Dongs and daily Chinese (ok, a bit of hyperbole and my body couldn't physically stand a junk food diet anymore, but still...). The one thing I liked about being overweight was the time factor but the resultant health problems ultimately made the decision for me and I haven't looked back. When I look in the mirror, I see the year's worth of hard work and it compels me to continue. But I must find compromise and I'm looking into more efficient workouts or shorter duration workouts.

Ria, when are you working out? Can you workout in the early morning before the family wakes up? That way, your family time is never compromised.

There are people that take body positivity too far, or use it as an excuse. I agree that its a bit ridiculous.

Its one thing to realize that you shouldn't get your sense of self worth from your appearance. Its a perversion of that same idea to use it as license to adopt unhealthy habits.

I see the same thing among some powerlifters, that in the pursuit of more strength gains, eat whatever they can as much as they can, at what has to be ill consequences to their health.
