I'm in my late 40's. I'm thin, but I'm very pear shaped and have a saggy mom belly and butt. I have found the best bathing suits for me are at Athleta. I get shorts with a tank. I'm small chested and bigger on the bottom, so this allows me to get two different sizes. I was so surprised at how incredibly flattering their suits are (now I have several). I feel comfortable and covered, but I also feel cute and sporty.
I buy a new one every year. I wear a 20, so I usually get a swimdress but the past year or so I've bought a two-piece, which is a brief under a strapless smocked tunic.
The definition of insanity is buying a bathing suit every year, in hopes that you will look better than the one you bought last year.
I was guilty of this for a long time, but now I stick to the Lands End Tugless Tank. It looked good when I was 25, and it looks as good as could be expected now that I'm 69.
I just got some shorts and a bikini top from Lands End. I know it makes my hips look wider, but I don't care. I'm just more comfortable being covered on the bottom.
In the past I've done many combos of tops and bottoms. My fav for walking around is a short skirted bottom from LE and a spaghetti strap top that comes down to the top of the skirt, but it's a PITA in a hot tub. The bubbles get all up in all the fabric.
I think one should wear whatever they feel most comfortable in regardless of age. Don't let the naysayers get to you! I frequent Soma and Everything But Water as there are some classy swimsuits available in a vast range of styles (bikini, one piece, etc.) I know both are on the expensive side (Soma especially), but Soma is holding their semi-annual sale, and EBW has sales throughout the year. Heck, I've found inexpensive classy pieces at Dillards. I do find that tankinis personally make me appear much heavier than I am due to my broad shoulders. I personally favor one piece suits (I hear they're making a comeback ) because you can control what you want to show...for example, if you wear a one piece but don't want to show your legs, you can always cover them with a simple skirt.
Bikini.......but then again, I'm usually in a wet suit.
