Tonight we had broiled burgers with jack cheese put on at the last minute. The buns went in the broiler for a bit of toasting and they were Delicious. The burger was fresh ground Angus from a neighboring ranchand my wife mixes a bit of A1 sauce into the burgers before cooking. We were going to grill them on charcoal but it was too windy. Who needs to buy expensive charcoal when the broiler in the kitchen stove works so well. To go with the burgers we made fries from russets, fried in olive oil and along with salt we sprinkled lots of garlic powder on the fries. Now I get to wash it down with a Sam Adams Lager.

Actually, this is my first attempt at homemade veggie soup.
I have been craving it for the last two weeks, so finally broke down and made a huge pot. I`m going to give half to my MIL...its not bad for the first time.

Just came indoors from a couple of hours planting bulbs, with cold ears and nose, dirty hands and sore muscles, and was greeted with warmth, music and the heavenly scent of bean soup bubbling away in the crockpot. Aaaahhhhh...... what a wonderful way to spend an October evening. After an appetizer of ibuprofen, supper'll be a big bowl of soup, crusty bread and the last of the apple slab cake that I made for Friday treat day.

Planting bulbs is such a hopeful thing. The right time to do it is when the October winds blow chilly and there are drifts of leaves piled by the wind up next to all the fences, but before the ground freezes. It seems such an odd thing to do on a cold autumn afternoon: digging holes in the garden, mixing peat moss in with the heavy, loamy soil, sprinkling bone meal carefully over the softened dirt, and then tucking the tiny little packets of spring color into the bottom of the hole and smoothing the dirt over the top.

Then for months, those little nubs of vegetation slumber deep in the frozen dirt under the piles of snow and ice while the cold winds whistle over the earth and it seems as though the winter will never loose its grip on us. And finally the sun begins to warm the earth, the piles of snow dwindle to dirty little mounds, and the green shoots start working their way through the cold soil. And then they burst forth from the dirt, and our eyes are smitten by the golden daffodils, the flame-colored tulips, the rainbow of hyacinths, and the deep purple crocus, and I am reminded again of the renewal that spring brings each year.

Yes, planting bulbs is a hopeful thing. And it was a good way to spend a cold October afternoon, thinking about bean soup and crusty bread.

I had 3 slices of pizza for lunch. But they were small. Dinner was a hit with the BLTs and the wife is making brownies at the moment. Boy I was good today.

Yesterday was a chilly, rainy day and called for the big pot of homemade chili. Tonight we finished off the leftovers. Yum, yum, yum.

Noma was thinking of you as I was eating a piece of chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and strawberries!
