Some of these are more things that locals tied to the city. "Famous" is a high bar.
Seattle, maybe a mix of the two:
--Amazon, which has been detailed as nauseum in every paper in NA
--Microsoft
--Starbucks and coffee in general
--Boeing...we've lost chunks but they still employ 65,000 or whatever
--Houseboats
--Pike Place Market
--Rain (maybe less now that NFL/MLB are open-air?)
--Losing the sonics
--Space Needle
--Mt. Rainier and mountain ranges to the east and west
--Ferries and Puget Sound
--Music outsiders called grunge
Some additional pilgrimage sites:
--Gum wall
--Bruce Lee's grave
--Park next to Kirk Cobain's house
--Oldest Starbucks
--Fish throwers
Interesting thread. Some that come to mind for me:
New York City: The Arts, dense population, finance.
Minneapolis: Cold, nice parks/lakes.
Boston: History, the "Big Dig", Fenway Park, Taxes.
Charlotte: Finance, nice 4-seasons.
Orlando: First rate theme parks, lakes, retirees.
Detroit: Autos, cold, trying to rebound.
Washington: Government, Smithsonian.
Phoenix: Very hot, retirees.
Denver: Sunny, snow, skiing.
Kansas City: Mid America, BBQ.
Miami: Tropical Beaches, tourists.
JJ (not to mention Jane Byrnne) would find his head spinning if he could see 180 degree turn the old Cabrini Green area has made from run down projects to high end dowwntown real estate.
