Mississippi is rated the fattest state. I had no idea.
I'm guessing it's because of the high amount of fried food in the deep south?
Yeah baby! Fried catfish, fried chicken, bbq pork, biscuits, cornbread. Heck, there's even a place in Memphis that deep fries its hamburgers. And in Mississippi they like their pickles soaked in concentrated Kool-Aid.
Cheese is pretty good but living here and being around dairy your whole life it gets to be second nature. I don't think Wisconsin ranks all that unhealthy even though we have a huge beer and cheese culture. Greg as you said I'm sure it has been up there though.
And there are many poor people in Mississippi and cheap food is often fattening. Plus with some poor people eating is the only pleasure besides sex they can afford.
Don't begrudge the poor what pleasures they can take, someday you may be called on account in front of St. Peter---"Oh yeah, you're the guy with the BMW who shopped at Whole Foods and resented the meagar pleasures the poor could afford. Tell ya what, we can give you a nice work-out down in Hell leaping through the flames, go down there and enjoy yourself".

I don't want to create a negative image of the south. It is one of the most beautiful regions and friendlinest regions in America. I think as another poster said because of the low income and cost of unhealthy food it creates a link where one can get by.
Pretty much, yes. They fry EVERYTHING down here. Even some vegetables. Fried chicken, etc etc etc.
Wisconsin however, does from time to time rank up there among the heaviest states due to the diary/cheese stuff going on.

Gheez, I'm really not in the south after all...LOL. You can't even get sweet tea and the restaurants seem to be trending more on whole grain than deep fried. And I think Wisconsin has more to do with the BEER! Although I do have to admit I like those cheese curds...
