Is there a good night life? What made it feel "too rural" to you? Is crime average, typical college town stuff? Is there good public transportation?

well athens is rural in the sense you can drive 10 mins from downtown and be in a fairly rural area. The downtown is great..wonderful nightlife, lots of pubs, bars, sidealk cafes, coffee houses, etc. It is primarily a college town.. think Ithaca, NY...Charlottesville, VA..Chapel Hill, NC. Athens compares very well with those places.

I'm really close to Ann Arbor, MI and I just love it. Would this also be comparable?

what I meant by "rural" is that there aren't any major highways and to me, that's kinda rural...
The nightlife is great, especially downtown...

I am in hospitality and I will be looking for a job at a hotel. I'm hoping to find both an apartment and hotel on a bus line, with a commute of around 15 minutes. Do you think this is possible?

I'm going to be heading down there with my dad in a couple of weeks. Any recommendations for what I should do/eat/etc?

Also...how is the shopping?

Raves:
Weather [relative to Chicago]
Pretty scenery; trees; close to rural areas
Cycling - I love bicycling

Rants:
Liberal Govt
- Crime the liberal govt put projects scattered throughout city and keep the police on a short leash. The end result is an underclass that preys on the students and other residents resulting in lots of property crime
- Taxes and fees keep going up
- Bad apartments- Athens has so many students that the landlords and management companies here kind of figure they can run their place like a crappy dorm and get away with it. Decent apartments in nice areas are rare and high priced.
- I am planning to buy later this year in Oconee County so that should remedy most of the rants.

Thanks for the tip on bad apartments. I've been looking at several on Rent.com and have found some that look decent, but anyone can take a pretty picture. Are you familiar with any of the following: Beechwood Pines, High Ridge, Exchange at Athens? I'm trying to find a one bedroom, with pool, and walk in closet
