Quick notes on what I observed at Thruway Shopping Center this wknd. I met my father this wknd at Midtown Desserty for dinner. After we ate, we went across to Thruway . It's definitely not the thruway that I grew up with. Noticed alot of empty spots and with Steinmart closing that's gonna be another dark spot in the center at night. I'm just waiting to see a big Novant sign slapped up at the Steinmart Location. ... i wonder if the Trader Joe's and Dewey's are the heavy weights that are keeping that center going.. also I could be wrong but wasnt their a Kirklands Home Store and a Hallmark here at one point??? Side note.. saw where another incident happened at 4 seasons over the wknd.. that place is gonna become a ghost town once the convention center downtown at the news and record site opens up... wonder what the city will do to keep the mall and old convention center place from becoming " just a part of town u shouldn't be in" ?

Malls themselves are on their way out. I think Four Seasons will be gone before anything is built on the N&R site (FWIW: I still think something of a miniature Epicentre is a better idea for that site).

As much as I think downtown revitalizations are a good thing, I think we're reaching (if not already there) the point, not just in Greensboro and Winston-Salem, but in other places larger and smaller than that, where the downtown areas aren't the areas that need all the intensive care and propping up from the public and private sectors anymore. That may have been the case in the 1990's and early 2000's but we're in a new era now. I'm not saying ignore them, but they aren't the acute problem spots now in terms of luring business and residential growth and fostering an overall sense of stability.

It's the previously solid, suburban areas that have exhibited a slow decades-long decline. Four Seasons and much of the area around it definitely fits that category. Thruway might (?) except I think the socioeconomic demographics are better there than at Four Seasons, which is why it supports places like Trader Joe's instead of Cash for Gold and Pawn shop type businesses.

I read in the TBJ where SECU has purchased the former BellSouth building between the mall and the theater and may locate up to 300 employees there in the future. Glad to see some new investment in the Four Seasons area; I agree with Jowel that it's not downtowns that are hurting so much anymore.

That's good news about SECU purchasing the building. Nice to know there are business investing in that aera still! Shows hope that the mall site and area would not just become a vacant run down lot, if the mall ever does close down.. I also worry about the convention center there. Especially when the new one downtown gets built. They are use to being the only convention center around and having 100 percent of that market ..

Soo last wknd I ventured to Hanes Mall. I didnt think I'd ever return after my last visit. But non the less i returned.and I must say, it was a enjoyable experience! Perhaps even if u squinted hard u could see the mall of the 90s appearing. It was busy, and stores were open and had. a hustle and bustle about them.it seemed like there was life inside the mall again! I thought to myself (this Is the mall life the younger generation knows) they dont know the 90s mall life and this is probably just as exciting experience to them as it was when I was young. I honestly cant see Hanes mall going away anytime in the next 20 years . Who know I might be wrong in 10 years ..but all I know is that I kinda seemed like old times!
