Right. A .22lr would do it, too. IF, and that's a big IF, it actually could penetrate. Therein lies the argument. Is the AK enough to penetrate through the skull (likely not) or into other vital organs (almost impossible against a charging bear)? You seem very certain of yourself and your AK, so if you want to go hunt grizzlies with a gun designed to shoot human targets, be my guest. We'll be reading your obituary in short order is my guess.
A steel core AK round will go through that bears melon like hot butter. It will wiz through a 15" diameter tree like nothing and crack a concrete block.

Gotcha. Just save the last round for yourself. It's probably a better way to go than the way the bear has in store for you.
You mean some Kodiak brown bear's calcium bone skull is impenetrable to steel bullet flying thousands of feet per second?
Bears are a lot tougher and can take a few shots in the body without the vital-hits and still can run a few miles. But skull, spine ...?
Bring whatever you have man. A 10MM will do the job on some bears. Make sure you are at the top of your game before walking/hiking in dangerous territory by lots of practice.
I'd like to get my hands on a .500 S&W one of these days.

You are more than welcome to hunt in Alaska with your AK whatever. Have at her.
