No one "needs" to, but it's their choice. If you don't identify with anything but American, good for you. But others have ties to other cultures as well. Why do they need to not h ave that connection?
How does your wife feel about her heritage? You say she's a legal immigrant. There's a difference between people who have had roots here for several generations, and people who can relate to a parent or a grandparent of a different culture.
My father is of a different 'culture'; does it mean that I can truly relate to it.................not in my case.
I personally dont care how many people move here wether their black, white, or poka-dotted. The main thing that I dislike about a large immigrant group in the area is when your increasingly forced to learn the language of the new commers (spanish) because they have not learned english, especially when they expect you to be fluent in their language and look at you like your an idiot for not knowing Spanish! I even had one guy the other day get upset with me and asked me in broken english "You no know Spanish? Why?" Arghh!
The English invading today's US and made the Natives learn english. At one time Spanish speakers couldn't speak their native language in public. Its just seem like spanish is coming back and is already like the second language for the US.

And the widespread use of Spanish is showing signs of being 'politically incorrect' here in the USA.
The pressure to force the (legal) immigrant Latinos to assimilate is picking up steam.

your 100% wrong, the french, british, spanish, dutch came and invaded the english were not even the first people to set foot in north america.
spanish was never a dominat language in north america, maybe in the west coast where the spanish invaded and forced those people to speak spanish.
the reason spanish is coming back is due to the massive immigration over the years from latin america buff said

And Spanish is showing signs of fading in importance as of late. 1-2 million Hispanics (both green card holders as well as illegals) are returning SOB, etc. due to our weak economy.

Eh? To be British does not always mean one is English, but the English In this context were British. Anyway, the first Europeans to set foot in North America are believed to be the Vikings (or associated northern Europeans).

Arguably, neither was English. Language dominance in North America was probably in a constant state of flux as different nations had interests here. Furthermore, dominance was nebulous at best as outside established European settlements the dominant, or prevalent, language most likely would have been the language of the Native Americans in the area - which was not uniform anyway. Or, the language in use would have been that of the person(s) who happened to be passing through, e.g. an English or Spanish speaker wasn't going to start speaking the language of the lands where he was hunting, mining, or exploring simply because he crossed the frontier border. One of the only times I can think of an Englishman speaking Spanish would be if he found himself in a Spanish settlement, or vice versa.
If dominance is based on population, then language dominance would definitely be in a constant state of change as more Europeans settled here and the native population was relocated, decimated, or integrated. Also, as one nation ceded control to another nation, logically, the official language of the land would have changed. However, the de facto language did not change immediately; I don't think that the people living in New Orleans at the time of the Louisiana Purchase (see below) suddenly started speaking English just because they were now subjects of the United States.
If dominance is based on physical land claimed, then English was one of the top three languages in use (not counting the native languages). Prior to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, French was (or would have been) the dominant language for a substantial portion of what would soon become the United States. Then you figure that what would become Florida, the states of the American southwest, and Mexico were claimed by Spain so Spanish would have been the dominant language in those regions until the mid-1800s (except Mexico, of course).

Spanish never really left.
~Mike (thinks English should be the "official" language of the United States but when making an argument for it we should be historically accurate)
The way I see it there are only a few predominantly caucasian places. The USA, Canada, Europe and Australia among them. The one thing all these caucasian countrys have in common is that non caucasians are immigrating to these places. You don't see caucasians immigrating to places like Korea, India, or Central America in the numbers that come here. We all know there here for one reason...our money.
The problem I have is that Koreans can go back to Korea and be with there own kind, so can Indians and Mexican and so on.
Where will caucasians have to go if something isn't done about immigration?
Could you imagin what would happen if China became a free society and opened up the floodgates?.....Game over folks
I always liked the idea of something called "Tri-states" a group of 3 states that works and lives with limited goverment, but is also not rasict either. deadbeats, welfare moms, nanny state liberals, moderate conservatives and vote for a check people can stay out, all other hard working people are welcome. maybe in 50 years we will have that type of country, heck maybe in 50 years the USA will not even exist anymore as a whole.
who knows what the future holds for the USA, will socialism get too much of a foothold and some states decide that they are better off without the central goverment than with it.
only time will tell.
