Good luck finding big city opportunities in many of the other ‘top 100’o cities. Among the largest ones, Chicago stands alone, most importantly on the ability to own RE.
Owning RE in Chicago land is a tough proposition these days giving crazy prop tax rates, which will go even higher for sure. Besides the city doesn't really generate much jobs these days, and IL unemployment rate is one of the highest in the country, despite booming US economy.
IL is bankrupt and doomed, leave now.

It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. I've only lived here for about a year and taxes have already been raised several times (Cook Co soda tax and the state income tax). I'm expecting more increases this year.

Good grief some of you are incapable of any sort of nuance or perspective.

IL has a flat tax. And is a soda tax significantly affecting your personal budget(?)

its not the soda tax itself that affects someones personal budget; its the cumulative effect of the plethora of taxes in illinois that affects your budget..

It is the cumulative that matters, but those two are far from the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

agree; if the soda tax annoyed you, just buy your pop outside of cook county..

Property taxes in particular are starting to explode. Homes are going to start becoming worthless across the state as property tax rates hit 5%+

They can't accept reality here. That will only lead to things getting much worse.
Hey maybe when the vast majority of people in Illinois are jobless and homeless with no hope or future then those that have their head in the sand will pull out and wake up.

Why the need to pile it on? Weren't you the single mom who relocated to Indy from CA?

Arguably, this is silly from your perspective.

Yes, IL does have a flat tax... that was just recently increased. My salary decreased by about $100/mo. So I basically lost $1200/yr.

While these small taxes aren't going to break someone's budget, they do mean less disposable income for everyone. These small taxes hurt low income earners more than high income earners.
