If we aren't talking about ethnicities, then why point out that Hispanics make up 26%?

First set is race.

Second set is national origin.

Don't complain to me. It ain't my system. That is how the census bureau does it.

Practically they track the Hispanics and no other national origin. That is because we apparently care about how Hispanic we are getting.

I've always looked at Hispanic people as being in the white race, but apparently some of them don't. It always surprises me when a Mexican calls us WASPs "white guys" because I've seen a lot of blue eyed blond people from south of the border, and south of their border too.

Also, I generally make the common mistake of calling people who speak Spanish, Hispanic people, but that's not accurate. I have a friend from Guatamala whose primary language is/was Spanish but she is Mayan Indian and German; she is not Hispanic. I know one Jewish guy who was born in Mexico and lives in Texas. His name is Raul Goldberg.

But when I said Las Vegas was less than 50% white I was referring mainly to non-Hispanic WASPish people. So if it is 78% white and you subtract 26% Hispanic (which covers all the Spanish speaking countries represented in Vegas) you get 52%. However I recall reading a newspaper article that said, like So Cal, Vegas has less than a 50% white majority now.

Anyway, I was just trying to answer the guy's question as best I could and have it make sense, not start a race (or ethnicity) war.

I believe the article you read suggested the schools were over 50% minority...with the "majority" being those who are "white" and not hispanic. . Racial "white" and non-hispanic is well over 60% of the population. Note that many Hispanics do not declare themselves as "white" . The actual racial makeup of the hispanics is quite complex...there are a number of papers discussing it in the literature.

Life in Las Vegas is great! (I'm following the original thread "How is life in LV?) Sorry, I am new to this. I have read this thread from beginning to end. I am a LV native. My husband and I are raising our 8 children here. My take is this...you can find whatever you are looking for. Some people never find happiness, some people are just satisfied, and some people make the best at whatever situation. That is what we are trying to teach our children. It can be done. This is my home...it is a great place. Sure there are many problems (aren't there anywhere you go?) but there are wonderful things as well!!!
Good Luck!

Default Still Here

I know i said i was moving and i am back east in 3 weeks and as excited i was to get here i am more excted to go home. Part of it is just plain old fasion home sickness. As to the comment to crime I am a freak on this computer and have read every report and state out there and the crime in vegas is not bad compared to most city back east , for example Las Vegas has a population of around 980,000 as of the 2006 end of year cencus report with a murder rate of 145 compared to phili. pop of 1.4 million murder rate of 389 vegas is way safer. But if you compare to NY which is 8 times ther pop. as vegas but only 3 times the murder rate of around 512 NY is way safe so i would not say vegas is really safer or more dangerous just a normal almost large city.

Default schools on the other hand

Before we left Jersey my son visited the high school. And it is a crowded school (or atleast we though) with 1700 kids. Palo verde high which is smaller than the Jersey school has get this 3600 kids thats right 3600 I had to ask 3 times where the h e l l do you put al those kids ( It is the Highest ranked high school in all of las vagas , but also the most crowded).I mean it looks like a pro footgame is letting out when the bell rings. An most of the schools here have around 3000 kids so no matter where you live the teachers or staff will most likely not no you kid. They dont no him at all at his school here after a year and a half of attending there. When I had to call the school he left in jersey last week after he went there for a year and a half and it was a year and a half later the girls in the office and his teacher remebered him , now that is something. What happens when all these old folks sell and most are trying to in my area and families move in MORE KIDS ...And the fools ,,who every plans the schools did it again before we decided to move we went to mountains edge to look at homes they showed us the site plan it showed 17 builders and over a 1000 homes and I saw 1 high school on the site plan , so i asked is that the only high school . The salesmana young guy around 27 says yes why i started laughing and said out loud they did it again. He than told me once I said we where not interested because of that reason that less than 25% of the homes where sold and the schools are already itr seams to be over ratio,,, What idiots.

PV has just over 3000 kids. A little tight but not outrageous. The numbers in the regular high schools run 2500 to 3000.

PV is not the top high school. That would be A Tech. It is a first tier school..around 14th overall.

Life in Las Vegas is what it is. I won and lost over 1million dollars there.
I feel the school system is good my children learned so much. There is not
gambling everywhere, however the only things for children is inside of casinos, that sucks. The zoo is a joke and there are half naked bill boards
everywhere. I was a stay at home mom and by the way I lost our home
twice who got my first job making 46dollars and hour and made and lost a
million dollars in less than a 5year span, while my daughter attended part time kindergarten, at the time there wasn't a full time kindergarten.
We made several trips a year to California to seaworld, disneyland, magic kingdom and I make a fortune on a time share we purchased because the vegas hype is just that. The weather okay is ridiculous, and prostitution is
illegal even though on flamingo and tropicana and pahrump its so rampant its insane. Over all Im out of Vegas and its like I can breathe again, can you raise a family there, of course you can. It's not the enviroment, its all how you see. If your addicted to gambling try a place where there are none for a while. I married three times in vegas over the course of thirteen years two of which died, one I left and came to where there was no casinos and met my now current husband in a nearby town at a small casino were happy now we have a small farm and we both dont gamble,
my girls ride horses and are in private schools and we have about 5 acres
I love this better. But vegas is only a plane ride away or we hop in the
rv for some family fun on the road. Me personally, I love vegas it isn't all glitz and glam, it can be outright treacherous. Its all where you hang out and the company you keep.
Oh and p.s. its not what goes on in vegas stays in vegas
Its what you play in vegas stays in vegas (lol)tip to remember
Ricky Tee signing off

The "half-naked" billboards are just near the strip and downtown, and of course near the outskirts of town drawing in visitors. "The Strip is not Las Vegas and Las Vegas is not The Strip." -quote from Papadon on another board.

Making and losing a million bucks in 5 years..I would still have most of it by now. It all depends on the person for sure. I live quite frugally but comfortably.
I know, i know, i'm helping to revive a dead thread..but i wasn't the first one.
