I don't know, I never lived outside of Long Island but I would definitely give it a try if I could (i've visited many other places though but never long enough to know how it feels to live there year after year).
But unfortunately, 90% of the other suburbs in this country are just boring generic cookie-cutter subdivisions with even crappier public transportation, very limited shopping options (with a Walmart and a few other expected chain stores). The only difference is that they are far cheaper but you really get what you pay for. Most of the country's other suburbs comparable to Long Island are expensive like Long Island so it wouldn't make a huge difference to move.
If I was a retiree or a person who wanted to move to a small-town or big city then I would definitely leave Long Island.
Wow, the super un-true stereotypical nonsense. There are so many much smaller hipper cities with suburbs that are not only cheaper but more cultural, better dining and education (college, not K-12 necessarily), shorter commutes more vibrant job markets and better housing stock. They don't have the beaches or proximity to NYC, period. The two things LI hangs it's hat on. I do like and admire my fellow struggling parents on LI, but if we were not saddled with this albatross of a house and our paycheck to paycheck jobs, I'd drag my cement shoed LI wife outta here in a heartbeat.
I couldn't disagree morewith this bit of preposterous hyperbole . Long Island continues to be one of the safest, best educated, prosperous places in America, with a unique set of difficult challenges.
More parochial Long Island negativity.
It's hyperbole for sure but based in fact. Mass exodus of talent, resources and $ going on. Layers of ineffectual obstructionist govt, poor business development and (sub)urban planning, taxpayer apathy and subsequent taxpayer rape. Not a recipe for growth or continued prosperity. The decline is in full effect. The cracks are beginning to show. All in all, still a fine place to live if you can afford it, but from a value perspective, dropping fast.
comparing OC or southern CA to long island is hysterical. people from all over the country if not world dream of moving to southern CA. NO ONE from other parts of the country even remotely considers moving to LI. LI is almost entirely natives and some who took job transfers to the area. People around the US dont uproot their lives to accomplish their dream in moving to nassau or suffolk county. They do that exact thing and move to southern ca every day. whens the last time u saw some wide eyed young girl from missouri stumbling around selden or lynbrook saying wow, cant believe i finally made it here?

Crooks - Sadly I haven't seen a PW since being down here... But, I'm happy to report that the Charlotte metro got 7-11s back very recently. Gotta love a good ole slurpee on a hot day and we have em now!

Rhode Island, South Jersey, Cape Cod...there are lots of nice places that are similar to LI,
for example - Cape Cod has 1 or 2 mcdonalds at tops in an 80 someodd mile span. How many do we have? 200? Same with other obnoxious retail stores/resturaunts. It's all local business over there. They are doing something right and preserving their historic towns while ours crumble to illegals and overdevelopment.
In 20 years LI will look like the South Bronx. (besides the parts of it that unfortunately already do)

If I could leave Long Island with a job that keeps my standard of living (doesn't have to be the same salary) where my wife could find a job with the same standard of living or I got a job that allowed her to stay home I would leave. I just don't know where.
I am a NE guy. Born in Boston. Raised on Long Island. Went to college in Philly. Lived in NYC for a while and now back to the Island. I have been to great places like N and S Carolina. Nice areas of Florida. Have seen some great places out West in Arizona. But my brother after about 5 years in vegas said it isn't worth it. You miss so many family events. You don't have a solid base of friends. It would be tough.
All I know is when it is time to retire after my kids get out of college (18-20) years I am leaving. Too expensive here. They tax you on everything and things are way too expensive. Would rather take my money and move to a place where I can stretch a buck. Here they will be charging you to breathe soon and with jobs leaving and the NIMBY attitude, new things will never be built.
