The (baseball) Giants proved that you can build your own stadium and make it profitable in very short order without public money.

Most sports teams are lazy and prefer to have someone else do the heavy lifting for them, but that's incredibly short-sighted. Cities are realizing now that they never get the big payoff they were promised when they write those huge checks and are insisting that franchise owners come up with economically sound business plans before making any concessions.

Any owner can build a stadium any time they want. All they have to do is get out the checkbook. Most tax payers aren't into billionaire welfare.
