The lack of bugs is absolutely wonderful in Eastport. In fact, we have left the doors open for a time during the summer. We bought expandable screens for the windows, and never had a problem. I worked in the yard and it was fantastic.

Is it the ocean breeze that keeps the bugs away or are they just not there?

It is the ocean breeze, mostly - since Eastport is an island sticking out by itself, it's harder for those bugs to breed. Growing up in Eastport, we rarely had to deal with the pests. That's true of any place directly on the ocean, you get less bugs. The more inland you go, the thicker they get.
Downtown Eastport in summer is a wonderful place to be - I think it's one of the reasons the state's biggest 4th of July parade is held there every year!

Oh yeah, that's true - those ants are pure evil, no way to get rid of them, superpowered evil! On Water St and right in town it's not too too bad, but where my folks live on 190 just past the Point, you can't stand still for 2 seconds anywhere outside their house.
Last year, my father got attacked while he was gardening and got bit so many times that he nearly had to go to the hospital, couldn't breathe or move much it was so bad!
When I was younger I got attacked while picking blueberries down by Dog Island, I couldn't step on one foot for 3 days afterwards.
Wicked!

do you mean past the Point as in Perry? I know what you mean... those little buggers have spread in that direction. We don't have them bad, so I don't notice them... all mine went from my yard over to tinbender's raspberry bushes! Really though, it seems to depend on where you are. For most of us it's not a big deal. We have blackflies here in Calais, right in town, I'd take the ants any day!

Those red ants have a wicked bite. I found out quickly this past summer when planting flowers and pulling weeds. This summer I am going to try the corn meal that peachie mentioned to put around the base of the house. Ask Peachie to explain the concept. I am having a senior moment.
