The Outlaw State

ONCE A CIVIL WAR: January 22, 1864---The Outlaw State

New York Times August 18, 1853

A desperate and deliberate murder was committed in Gasconade County, Missouri, on the night of the 27th, by Stephen Howser, on the person of William Farris. The murderer, the deceased, and others, had been spending the day together at a country store, and some difficulty had occurred between them in consequence of the refusal of the deceased to play a game of cards proposed by Howser. On the way home Howser persuaded Farris to accompany him to the house of his aunt, who got up and gave them some supper, of which they partook in a friendly manner. After supper, Howser told his aunt to go into another room and get some bran to feed the horses. While in the room she heard a noise, and thought she heard something fall on the floor. As soon as the noise had ceased, Howser came to the door and ordered her to come out. She then went into the room, and seeing Farris murdered, she ran to the bed and caught up a child in her arms. Then Howser ordered her to walk before him to his grandmother's, Mrs. Wyatts, some half-mile distant, where he armed himself, and, after exacting a pledge from the women not to tell, as long as they could avoid it, he left on horseback. Farris was most brutally murdered, his throat was cut from ear to ear, and his body stabbed in eleven places, either of which wounds, it is supposed, would have caused death.

On this date in 1865, a group of Confederate Partisians attempted to surrender to Federal Troops, General Lee had surrendered over a month basically ending the Civil War. Approaching the federal troops under the white flag of surrender, never less the federals opened fire refusing to accept surrender. One of the Confederates was shot through a lung and almost died. His name was Jesse Woodson James, the most famous of all outlaws

Please keep in mind that Jesse was the only one that told the story this way. No one else present that day mentioned they were surrendering when he was shot.

Yes I know what a partisan is - one mans partisan is another mans terrorist.

I just have never heard of a Part-i-sian. Partying Persian? Part Asian? Or a new grated cheese
