You may have heard on the news about a southern California man
put under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found
he owned 100 guns and allegedly had (by rough estimate)
1-million rounds of ammunition stored in his home. The house also
featured a secret escape tunnel.

My favorite quote from the dimwit television reporter: "Wow! He has
about a million machine gun bullets." The headline referred to it
as a "massive weapons cache”.

By southern California standards someone even owning
100,000 rounds would be called "mentally unstable. Just imagine if
he lived elsewhere:

In Arizona , he'd be called "an avid gun collector”.

In Arkansas , he'd be called "a novice gun collector".

In Utah , he'd be called "moderately well prepared", but they'd
probably reserve judgment until they made sure that he had a
corresponding quantity of stored food.

In Montana , he'd be called "The neighborhood 'Go-To' guy".

In Idaho , he'd be called "a likely gubernatorial candidate".

In Wyoming , he'd be called "an eligible bachelor".

And, in Texas , he'd be called “a deer hunting buddy”.

[eyes back wall]
[digs out chainsaw]

Crap, the rubber gas-primer bulb has gone to crumbles. Last time the chainsaw needed work (modern gasoline additives eat the rubber lines) the shop jury-rigged the plumbing cuz you can't get parts for these small Mcculloughs anymore. Looks like there are now some aftermarket parts, tho... like
Chainsawr Chainsaw Fuel Primer Bulb

Useful Chainsaw Tips: put the brake any time you're not actually cutting (not just when you set the saw down) ... and it will run about four times as long on the same amount of gas. I got in the habit real quick once I realised I could get an hour out of a tank instead of just 15 minutes.

[Now, about that back wall.. crap, my axe handle is busted too!]

They -- the Ottoman Turks, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Adolph Hitler, Mao Tse Tung, and every other blood stained dictator of the last one hundred years -- all did.

In West Virginia he'd be called "rich".

Actually I read the article and the dude was caught on the local Wal Mart surveilance camera exposing his genitals to woman and a few kids and following them in the aisles. That prompted the investigation.

Where I come from he wouldn't have received 72 hours of evaluation in the psych ward. He would have received 6 weeks in ICU.

And before firearms, various suppressive regimes made it illegal for average people (ie. anyone outside the nobility) to carry edged weapons (ie. swords). Disarming the populace has always been a popular dictatorial technique.

No doubt there was a caveman who enforced his rule by decreeing that no one (other than selected enforcers) shall carry a rock larger than his fist.
