LOL Dare... do you think it's an accident that YOU are the Medical Language Specialist that attracts these people with these odd medical issues? Who knows, maybe there really IS a school bus blocking those arteries (moms here must remember the Magic School Bus that went on all sorts of amazing field drips. Maybe we should call you our very own Miss. Frizzle And leaky eyeballs... that really does sound like it's right up your alley!!

ROTFL!

that's too funny, Dare!
I worked for many years as an acct. mgr. at a mail order pharmacy--just interpreting dr's rx's was interesting enough in a similar way, but that was very direct. Previously "transcribed" reports by a voice recognition platform would probably really throw less experienced transcriptionists for a loop. Odd that such a thing is in use. Everyone knows the old telephone game and how easily messages are misinterpreted with additional human middlemen...let alone computerized middlemen. At least your work isn't boring!

Hmmm....I never heard of the Magic School Bus....'splain please........

Lisa - Dr's handwriting certainly can be a challenge! Before I got into this line of work I was the Medical Audit Coordinator in a hospital.....I had to read through charts and if anything looked out of the ordinary I had to ask the doc about it - there was one Dr. whose handwriting measured 1/8" in height (we measured it)...I had to tell him to write bigger! I said, "Dr. Z, I know all about patient confidentiality, but c'mon, this is ridiculous!" <g>

Using VR is quite "the rage" now - it's supposed to save money and eventually it's supposed to put the MLS's out of business. Right now, anyway, the software isn't good enough to worry about - a lot of what we do now is editing of VR, but there are so many errors, they can't go through without being listened to. Same with work that is off-shored - those reports usually have to be redone from scratch, they're so bad......but you're right - I don't get bored!

The scary part, at least to me, is if some of this stuff gets through to the chart, then is used for billing or followup care of a patient - if it's wrong, all kinds of problems can follow the errors.....sigh.....ain't technology wonderful.....

I was working on a cardiac catheterization and I'm reading along with what the VR had "transcribed"...According to that, the patient had a school bus in his right coronary artery.....talk about a blockage!

In another report, the VR picked up that the patient had "leaky eyeballs" instead of a leaky heart valve....

There are a lot of people with very strange anatomy walking around out there....

Good morning forum friends. Since many of you seem to be pet lovers, I figured I would come here.

My cat, Beavis, is 13 and has leukimia and also liver issues. I think that we have done all we can and unfortunately I think my husband and I need to "make the decision". He lost over 2 pounds since May. Despite steroid shots, he will not eat. We even bought him a rotisserie chicken from shaws and tried steak-absolutely no interest. The only way he drinks water is if I hold the bowl up to him. Right now he is "living" in the cat carrier. We actually slept with the cat carrier on the bed because I wanted him near us last night. He randomly cries for no reason and I wonder if he is getting sharp pains like you or I would from cancer.

He has no energy, he is severly anemic and a candidate for blood transfusion. However, since he is so ill, a blood transfusion would be a moot point. Other than spend $$$$$$ and go to oncologist and not even be guaranteed of a better outcome, we are at the point where it is almost over. I don't want him to suffer but how do I know this is the right thing?

I know others don't feel this way-but he is part of my family. He has seen me through some tough times-never leaving my side when I was in and out of the hospital for almost 6 months in 2006. He has been there to comfort me through many deaths including my sister and grandmother. My husband and I got him shortly after we married and he made the move from NJ to NH with us.

He was rescued, along with his mom and siblings, from a crack house in Camden NJ. He and his siblings had been abused and thus he was always a scardy cat to most people but not to my husband and me.

He is a wondeful cat and I just want to do what is right.

Thanks for listening.

Nicolem

Nicole - I'm so sorry to read this - I know how painful making that decision can be. This is going to sound kinda "out there" but here goes - I had to make that decision with 2 dogs and a cat. It was not easy. I listened to the vet, but I also listened to my pets. To me, from what you describe Beavis is doing...or actually not doing, he's telling you it's time and would like you to help him cross over Rainbow Bridge as smoothly as possible.

You will most likely second guess yourself many times over, but don't. It sounds like Beavis is having pain and it is time.

I don't mean for this to sound harsh. My pets were part of my family, as well and Angel (one of my dogs), especially, had been through so much with me, but there came a time when I knew it was her time...the same with Scootch (my cat). My other dog, Tiffany, had been to the vet the week before and everything was good - she woke up one morning howling with pain, we took her to the vet and she actually had liver cancer, the tumor had grown quickly and to the point where it was pressing on her spinal cord. With Tiffany, the decision was obvious, however painful. With Angel and Scootch, things were more subtle, but they did let me know, in their own ways, that it was time.

Talk to your vet and see what he/she advises. In the end it will be your decision. As I said, to me, it sounds like Beavis is telling you what to do...he'll still be with you in spirit - I still "feel" Tiffany, Angel and Scootch with me. We're here for you, if you need us.

Big cyber-hugs coming at you during this painful and difficult period......

Dare-thank you. No your advice does not sound "out there" at all. I do believe he is trying to tell us. I do have a call into my vet-she is doing a surgery right now. We have been in contact with her and knew it was coming. We decided to try the steroid shot to see if it would help at all. It has not. I hate to seem him this way.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with me about your beloved pets.

Thank,
Nicolem

Oh Nicole, I'm so sorry! I know the pain you're feeling - caring for cats myself for the last 20 years. Your brain can know, but your heart hurts so much. It's very hard to make that decision, but the only small comfort is that they will feel better. zen hugs!

Poem For Cats

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.
