An unnamed donor bequeathed $5 million to Montclair State University last week, the largest anonymous donation to ever be given to the school, officials said Wednesday.
The donor designated $4 million of the donation to be used for scholarships for women and minorities. University spokeswoman Paula Maliandi said the funds can be utilized as early as for the 2009-10 school year.
Does that not seem a bit racist? What if someone donated scholarships for everyone except black males? or Hispanic females?
No, it's not racist. There are many scholarships out there that are gender/ethnic specific. It says women & Minorities it didn't say "Whites Only" scholarship.
I agree with Alex07860 - It's not racist - White women can apply.
Besides, the donor can do whatever s/he wants - it's his/her money.
No one considers Live Aid racist although it specifically donated to African only.

No. They didn't say "everyone exept" they specified women and minorities, the fact that white males would be excluded is secondary. It's a private donation, they can do with their money what they want. Plus, with a fund paying scholarships towards a couple of groups, that frees up more scholarship money for everybody else.
For all you know the donor could be a white male who feels privileged and wants to help those he feels didn't have the same opportunities he did.
Just say thank you that someone cared enough to give their money to help others rather than buy a bigger house or a yacht or some other meaningless toy. And they didn't even ask for recognition.

its excluding white males. that is the only group excluded.
Could you donate money and specify that it cant go to black males or something? no way, the school wouldn't accept the money.
I am not sure anyone would be comfortable with a donation that said for Majority and women only, so I am not sure why we tolerate this kind of thing. It doesn't help move us towards a color blind society. While it's true the donor can make any stipulation they want the University is not obligated to accept the money.
I agree that it is a form of reverse discrimination against white males, but this is happening more and more recently, and I doubt it's going to change anytime soon, so I guess we'll just have to get used to it.
But I disagree with the statement saying "It's their money they can do whatever they want with it." That's not true. If it said "White males only" then there would be outrage.
What would happen if someone made a similar donation with the stipulation "for white males". Or for only "men" regardless of race.
Would that be seen as racist or sexist? Would the school accept it? Maybe they're not "PC", but donations with these stipulations are really no different.
