Hi everyone- I am new to this forum. I just received a call last week from Langsam that I got a 1-BR in Steinway Estates after interviewing back in November. This kind of came out of nowhere because after all this time I wasn't really expecting to move now. I assumed the building must have been filled.
I saw the apartment last night. The building is very nice, but am just wondering how everyone feels about living here so far. It seems like the heat might be an issue? Has anyone received a heat bill yet? I am curious as to how much the utility bills will be on top of the rent. Also, has anyone heard yet how much the parking will be? Also, it seems like amenities are very basic- no microwave, dishwasher, or laundry in unit. Is that true for all the units?
Lastly, how do you like the neighborhood? I have heard only good things about Astoria, but have only been there a couple times. I have always lived in Brooklyn, and currently work in Williamsburg. I will be moving with my 8 month old baby, so just trying to make sure I am making the right decision! Thanks!
I have one more question.. since the heat is electrical that means that we pay for the heat? so... how they think is affordable rent?...
It may not be...my con ed bill was $86 for 15 days...ill have to see how next month goes. My friend lives in Hunter Point South and she turns heat off at night. she pays around $85 a month. FYI...my PTAC unit runs hot air on the cool setting.

Electric heat is always a downer and can be a very big burden on people who like to keep warm apartments. It's basically the developers cheaping out and passing the cost on to the tenants. Do your pipes freeze if you don't keep the heat on in the winter in these kinds of places? that's the biggest concern.

Well HPS includes heat for electric and cooking. I'm trying to figure how she ends up with $85? unless its just for electric that she uses.

Yes, you have to pay for heat. The apts are big and beautiful albeit, no microwave/vent or W/D. The windows are huge, however, with that it mean it would get cold. I don't live there, I had to turn it down as I get cold very easily and like the apt to be warm 24/7. I couldn't afford to pay heat considering I like to have a toasty place. In the summer however, I think it would be nice!

My friend at HPA pays electric.
