I am not surprised that the crime occurred at that particular spot in Riverdale, because it's desolate, and near the park. At 12:30 am, it's dark, quiet, and if someone had walked from the subway while using the iPhone, it's a crime of opportunity. iPhone crimes seem to happen everywhere, as there is such a market for them, and people tend to be too complacent, flashing it on the subway, or on the street, etc. I believe there was a getaway car involved, too, so it might have been a planned heist, i.e., someone followed off the 1-train. It's tragic, and goes to show that one cannot be complacent when on the streets, regardless of the neighborhood.

Agreed. Still don't understand when I'm riding the subways and just walking the streets, how people are just THAT comfortable having their gadgets out like that. It really boggles me because it's just common sense you don't do that if you don't want any trouble. The best being that you get robbed and the worst being that you get killed for your objects.

Weird thing is that if you look at the rest of the stats the 43rd actually is having a pretty significant decrease in crime this year.Homicide is about the only category that is up.Other than that it's had a 7.5 % decrease in the crime rate compared to a citywide 3% increase.

To be fair I think because crime really has come down alot in NYC, and visible street crimes/fighting etc have decreased, people feel more comfortable. I am guilty of it too at times. When was the last time you saw an actual street crime (like robbery, attack, fight, etc) take place in front of you? I can't remember.

Honestly, a few years ago. But I was in the projects. So I don't even think I should count that.

statistics this year say otherwise... you not seeing a robbery live doesn't equate to the entire city of NY...
